Help me get rid of my endless thrush

Please help a gal out and tell me your recommendations for getting rid of vaginal thrush that keeps coming back?

I get thrush multiple times a year and am always on some sort of fluconazole course. I've tried the tablets, the pessaries, the cream. I know all the stuff about how to clean myself, not wear tight/synthetic clothing and I am not diabetic. My thrush goes when treated but always comes back.

Anyone else in a similar boat had any luck in finding something to ward the bloody thing off? I shoved yoghurt up there once but nothing happened other than a mess.

I had this. I was prescribed the pessary for 14 days straight. I had to stop because my period started but once I finished the course since then it hasn’t returned.
it was a bit inconvenient as had some restrictions such as not having sex while carrying out the treatment. But that’s a minor inconvenience for the benefit afterward.
mine we believe is hormone related.

i can’t see mention of a partner. If you have one, be sure to treat him as well

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/03/2026 20:45

Are you on contraception? I always got thrush when taking hormonal contraceptives.

LasVegass · 28/03/2026 21:05

OP, the combined pill is the one you usually take with a break every month (or back-to-back for 3 months and then a break etc), the progesterone only you take with no break.

The contraceptive pill can increase chances of getting Thrush. Are you on the pill?

Give up sugar, take good probiotics and oil of oregano capsules (I get mine from Holland and Barrett) - this is what works for me.

What do you use to wash with? Do not use anything scented down below! I used to get thrush regularly but since using only unscented ph balanced products I have not had it in years. Also check any sanitary products are not scented as this also causes outbreaks of irritation.

Probiotics. If I stop taking them the thrush comes back very quickly.

Which ones do you take? Ive looked at these but there were so many I didnt know what to try.

If you have a sexual partner, have thry been treated? If not, they could be reinfecting you. Get them to take fluconazole tablets too. Men don't always have symptoms (though a friend of mine said it almost drove him insane when he did have symptoms, before the Canestsn etc kicked in.)

Came here to say this. I had it recurrently and eventually, the GP prescribed my partner pills too (we had the same GP). Sorted it out. He'd been giving it to me.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 28/03/2026 23:11

Oh, and not sure what you could use, but toilet paper set off my thrush for a long time too. Maybe wash with water after using the loo (both wee and poo) instead for a bit?

I take these

Many people will recommend Optibac for women as they target the vagina but I found the dose wasn't big enough for my needs and the thrush returned. They would have cost too much to get the right dosage.

The ones above are supposed to be taken once a day but I have to take two. As long as I do that the thrush stays away.

Obviously everyone is different so experiment with what works for you. There are different potencies as well.

Thanks for the thoughts! Im late 30s now but this has been going on since mid 20s so I dont think its a vaginal estrogen things but ill mention to the GP.

It was swabbed a year or so ago and it was thrush, I guess this latest episode could be something else but it seems unlikely.

Kefir and no sugar sounds like the way forward. No one has mentioned probiotic tablets which is interesting, but kefir is probably better anyway.

Don't be too quick to dismiss it. I spent a fortune on thrust medication in my early 30s to no effect, i also with hindsight had the full range of classic perimenopause symptoms starting from 33, but was dismissed as too young, periods too regular, for years. Now on HRT and it was definitely cyclical changes in oestrogen levels all along, i am in no doubt.
I use vagifem internally and ovestin externally now.

How long from starting the hrt/vagifem did it help with the symptoms can I ask?

So initially i was just on transdermal oestrogen and within weeks i took my daughter to the swimming pool and realised that i didn't instantly burn down below when i entered the chlorinated water, so some relief was quite quick, but it took starting the ovestin for things to really improve although i needed it every other day not twice a week.

Then i had a mirena fitted in December and my GUS symptoms returned big time. So now trying to get on top of them with vagifem and ovestin.

It's not been a quick process. But local Oestrogen is definitely good stuff.
