I’ve been passing massive blood clots this evening. Im on my period, I have very heavy ones but never like this before. It feels like Im giving birth. Has anyone had this before and was it ok?

Unusually heavy bleeding needs checking out really - advice is if you are filling more than a pad an hour then you need to go see someone. Give 111 a call.

I have had similar heavy bleeding, clots like tennis balls that were very uncomfortable. In my case it was due to heavy bleeding from fibroids.

Ive had about 5 dinner plate sized ones in tge last hour and a half

i have a huge fibroid yes!

Poor you. Can really sympathise. I'd try and seek some medical advice. I've had heavy bleeding alot of cycles over the last year. Last week I switched to the mirena coil from the copper. Also experiencing some peri menopausal symptoms. It's early days but hopefully it will help, only a slight bleed after insertion. Also ask your doctor for tranexamic acid as this helped a bit with the heavy flow.

You need to go to an and e.

Haggisfish3 · 22/03/2026 20:33

It’s most likely all fine but they need to stop the bleeding.

How old are you? It could just be perimenopause but if it’s really unusual for you I would call 111 or go to a&e. Take some photos of the clots

livelyparsnip · 22/03/2026 20:36

im 40. I called 111 and they told me to go to a&e which is so not what I want to do on Sunday night

Are you in pain? How long has it been going on? It's your judgment call really but dinner plate size it could be worth seeing someone ASAP.

Are you already on any contraceptives or coil? If you are it would be more cause for concern as they should keep things stable.

I had similar experience caused by perimenopause and fibroids. Very regular and predictable until that cycle with huge clots, palm sized. Came on suddenly I bled for months with the odd few days break wound up very anemic. Seems my progesterone was on the floor so not controlling bleeding. Progesterone balances out estrogen, and fibroids worsen with excess estrogen.

After a scan and trying a few things via GP, Progesterone only pill completely stopped the clots and eventually all bleeding, they also gave me norethisterone. It worked well and fairly quickly.

I had similar and ended up being rushed through A&E to resus as was tachycardiac. We wouldn’t accept bleeding that heavily from any other part of our body, so why do we minimise bleeding from our vaginas?

That sounds so scary. What was the cause for you in the end?

And you're right about the bleeding. If I lost the same amount of blood from a wound it would be an emergency.

Did you go to A&E OP?!

livelyparsnip · 23/03/2026 10:58

I did because 111 told me they’d made an appointment. My friend drove us there but then there was a massive wait and I felt bad for friend so I said let’s go. I thought the chances are it was ok but I also was slightly worried tha if it happened again overnight I might be done for. Fortunately it didnt and im ok. I woke up with a very bad head and very dark rings under my eyes but I feel like I’m recovering now. Fortunately a light day at work

I had polyps on my cervix. Once they were removed I was ok.
