Didn’t Feel Speculum Go In At Smear - Is This Normal??!

So I had my smear today. I always tell them not to tell me when they’re doing it because that works better for me. I start a conversation with them and just zone out. But today, I didn’t even feel the speculum go in. I only realised it was all happening when I felt the actual sweep of the smear. I’m 40. And since my last smear, I’ve had my third child. Historically I’ve always felt them go in to the point where it was uncomfortable and something I had to breathe through. Is this my new normal at this age? Is this common for others at a similar point in life as me? That you don’t even feel something go in? …
(Or maybe the nurse was just amazing at her job..?!)
Spiralling ever so

You either have an incredible nurse or a baggy fanny. Either way, a non uncomfortable smear is a bonus.

I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

You’re right. Find the positives in this, and do some pelvic floor exercises.

You’re joking, you too! Ok that’s quite comforting. Thank you.

We have an excellent nurse at our practice and she is really good.

My last smear was the first one where the nurse actually said ' hang on let's get the right size speculum, you'll need a small ' and wow it made such a difference, hardly felt it- so maybe they just used the right size for you too?

I've found it depended on the nurse AND the position you are in. A good nurse will get you to move your hips/bum if you show any discomfort and then you don't notice it.

I’ve been doing smears for 15 years. How have we changed the way in which we do them? We haven’t.
