Which contraception to help with periods

Hi

Ive never took the pill since being young many moons ago.

Im 37 now and the last year my periods have been abit all over;
They range between 3-13 weeks, I was like clock work before.

More recently, my periods are so heavy. I'm having to change a super tampon within an hour.

Tbh I'm just over periods now. I've got my kids, don't want more.
So what would be the best form to take to stop periods all together?
is this a thing? Is it ok to not have a period or is a break needed?

Have you seen a doctor about the change in your periods? I’d consider that alarming and needed to be investigated.

If there’s no sinister reason then you could take the progesterone only pill, one a day and you don’t get a period at all. No breaks required, just one tablet each morning. I used it for over a decade.

Definitely get checked out to make sure there's no underlying reason for the heaviness. Going through one tampon an hour is certainly something a doctor should want to investigate.

The mini pill has basically stopped mine. I get some spotting for a week a couple of times a year and that's it. I use hana pill and get it delivered as my local pharmacist often seems to run out.

Ok thank you both will get in touch with the doctor.
i wasn't sure if it was because of my age and reaching menopause. I'm pretty clueless though

Will ask about the mini pill if all is well.

Given your age and length of time you’ve had this heavy bleeding it’s even more of a concern and important to get checked.

Is it just the bleeding or do you have any symptoms such as pelvic pain? Any weight loss or generally feeling tired? Obviously only answer if you’re comfortable sharing.

@CallmebubblesdarlingeverybodydoesNo pain at all, not even cramps anymore.
weight is fine and stayed steady over the year.
I am feeling tired but I do have low iron

Also to just add, the heavy bleeding has been more the last 2 periods, should have said not a full year of such heaviness

I reccomend the implant. I had 4 over 12 years and loved it. I am soon to be going back on it as I too am over periods although mine have never been regular and my husband and I have decided not to have kids.

Sunshineclouds11 · 24/03/2026 11:35

@ToadRageThank you will look into that

Definitely contact your drs and discuss it. I am 39 and have been suffering with heavy periods which are ruining my quality of life every month to the point I can’t even leave the house some months they are that heavy. I went for a ultrasound and they found that my endometrium lining is thicker than it should be and I have possible polyps. I am booked in for 3 weeks time to have a hysteroscopy to investigate, removal of my polyps a biopsy sample and I’m the going to be having an endometria ablation in the hopes that the ablation will stop my periods or make them considerably lighter!

@AAT86I have blood tests tomorrow.
She was wanting to put it down to stress, but tbh my life has always had a level stress and nothing has been heightened to knock my periods this much so I asked for bloods.

fingers crossed all is well and it helps you! It's so draining isn't it:

If it continues then push for investigations. I had to do the same thing. I put it off for ages as I just thought oh it’s my age etc but it’s gotten to the point some months I’m flooding a night time size pad within 30 mins! I can’t even use a tampon as I think it would fall out 🤣 if you have your bloods and still suffering ask to be referred x

Sunshineclouds11 · 24/03/2026 20:25

@AAT86I totally get it!
I put a tampon in on my last period for the school run thinking I'd be safer than a pad, as I was walking out of school it was literally coming out, good job I took the car that day otherwise it would have fell out my trouser leg 😂🙈
yes I will thank you
