Was your last smear hpv positive? Are you smoking and drinking alcohol regularly? As I know that can keep you positive - my understanding is hpv can go dormant when stress is low and health is good.
I’ve been HPV positive in the past and needed to have biopsy, but have been HPV negative in the ten years since.
Where are you in your cycle? That can affect spotting.
How old are you? Early signs of peri are erratic periods which can present as spotting.

I’d get a hormone check if you can, and another smear if you’re worried

Hey @Beya4567have you seen the GP yet?

pbdr · 02/03/2026 09:06

Spotting after sex can have quite a few different causes. Most commonly due to a cervical ectropion - a harmless eversion of the columnar epithelium
of the cervical canal onto the surface of the cervix. It can also sometimes be caused by things like STDs/ pelvic inflammatory disease, or endometriosis. Rarely spotting can be an indicator of more concerning cell change on the surface of the cervix, which could ultimately lead to cervical cancer, so certainly should be checked out, especially as you are HPV positive. But please be reassured that cervical cancer typically develops slowly, over the course of many years, and so if your cells were completely normal less than a year ago any concerning changes would likely be at an extremely early stage and should be easily treatable.

Make an appointment to see your GP to get a speculum examination to check your cervix, and they can decide whether any further investigations are warranted. Try your best not to spiral in the meantime.
