Periods gone crazy

Hi girlies I’m just after some advice. I’m 37 and for the past 6 months my periods have changed dramatically! My cycle is getting longer (37 days last time) and when my period finally comes it’s horrific. For the first 2 days I pass lots of big clots and have to change pad/tampon every hour. Then day 3 onwards is normal.
I will be ringing my GP but just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced anything like this and if you have, what did you do? TIA xx

I would hazard a guess it’s perimenopause. If you look more closely at the symptoms you might realise you’ve got quite a few.

And if they ask for a blood test to diagnose it, tell them no as it’s not required as long as the symptoms are there. Blood testing is too unreliable for a diagnosis.

I started peri at 38 - I’m 43 now, and my periods stayed like that and got so much worse. I’m having a mirena coil fitted tomorrow in the hope it will sort my periods out.

I wish you good luck on your journey with this because it’s been a real eye opener for me and not an easy ride. I hope it’s different for you. Take care x

Yes, this happened to me. They got progressively heavier through my thirties, and got even worse after I had my children mid thirties. I'm now just turned forty. They became almost unmanageable in the last few years. I developed anaemia, likely related. Would suggest getting your GP to check your iron levels. I've just had a coil fitted, as it's supposed to help reduce the heavy bleeding considerably eventually. The first few weeks have been a wild ride with bleeding and spotting on and off, but I'm getting to be patient as I gather it should start tos settle down between 3-6 months after fitting.

I’d ask for a referral to gynae. I always had bad periods (flooding and clots) but after my first child (I was 41) the flooding and clots were worse in days 1-3 - like you changing every hour (sometimes more).

I was fobbed off by GP with “some women have heavy periods, take iron” despite me pointing out I was already taking iron. I ended up very anaemic and referred to gynae. Tests confirmed I had adenomyosis and Endometrial Hyperplasia, the latter recently escalated to Endo cancer and so I’ve now had a hysterectomy At 46.

My situation is obviously extreme so more than likely you’re entering Perimenopause, but do push to get checked out if you’re fobbed off!

I seen a gynae two weeks ago, as my periods started missing months and then being really heavy and lasting ages. I was given an internal scan and all looked ok, so she prescribed the progesterone only pill and it stopped the bleeding straight away. No side effects so far. Also needed iron as now have iron deficient anaemia now.
