Found a lump on my breast and now I'm terrified.

Last week I felt a small lump on the inside of my breast and it wasn't on the other breast so I assumed that it wasn't normal.
I'm ashamed to say I don't check my breasts normally and just took a random notion last week and felt it so I don't even know how long it's been there.
The doctor felt it also and I've now been transferred to a breast clinic.im absolutely terrified, I'm 45 , there's no history of breast cancer in my family. I'm a single mum with an 8 year old son who has ASD and is basically delayed for his age.
I'm in absolute bits, please tell me any good stories of finding a lump and it being ok or just general support,.I'm really scared.and imagining all sorts, dying and leaving my son behind to fend for himself etc

I had an appt within 2 weeks - but only just. I had convinced myself it was a cyst and thought I'd get a definite verdict on the day but when they said it was a fibroadenoma and needed a biopsy - even though the consultant said he was 99% sure it was a fibroadenoma - I then had to wait another 3 weeks for the biopsy results because they cancelled the first follow up clinic which wasn't ideal!

Do bear in mind that different Trusts have different policies. My hospital will biopsy absolutely anything that isn't a cyst, just in case. So just because they do a biopsy doesn't mean it's definitely dodgy, or even suspected to be dodgy.

Hi, I'm also in Northern Ireland and my GP found a lump in my breast yesterday. I had a text today saying I should get an appointment within 2 weeks ( hope i don't have to wait any longer).
Like you I'm quite worried but as mentioned most lumps aren't cancer so trying to be positive. I've done lots of housework today to keep my mind busy lol.
Lots of positive posts here.
Thinking of you xxx

I had a hard lump appear and had all the mammograms and biopsies and it was considered age related changes. I was told at the breast clinic most of the time it’s nothing. I tried to approach the wait as a que sera moment- there is absolutely nothing you can do until you know what your dealing with so worry for me was a waste of emotion until I knew for sure there was something to worry about. Belting out que sera kind of takes your mind off it and you feel a bit silly at the same time

@ByLemonFish thank you, that's very reassuring to know you're in Northern Ireland and will be seen in 2 weeks..I'm in the Northern Trust and the GP seemed to think it could take up to 8 weeks. I hope it all goes well for you and you can get your results very quickly

Hopefully it won't be as long as 8 weeks

I had one and it was a Fibroadenoma, nothing to worry about

I found a lump before my wedding. Doctor felt it and I went on the 2 week wait. I was absolutely terrified! I thought the worst and I just kept picturing my babies growing up without me. Anyway turns out I was being very dramatic as the nurse took one feel and said nope just a fatty lump, nothing to worry about.

I hope you have the same outcome, but please dont stress as it will change nothing.

@Meadowfinch thank you, I'm so pleased that you recovered. Can I ask, did you have to get a masectomy? I'm terrified of having to get one

I did, yes. The combined advice of oncology, the consultant surgeon and the consultant radiologist was to remove the breast so I went with that, playing it safe.

It was day surgery, completely painless and healed with no issues. I was offered reconstruction but that normally involves rebuilding using tummy fat and I didn't have any. The surgical alternative was not something I fancied, so I've delayed until I'm a bit fatter.

It honestly hasn't caused me an issue.
