Peri and period pain

I’m on the mini pill and have been for years. Very rarely have a period and it’s been painless for a long time. Last month I suddenly had one and the cramps were unbearable almost and now it’s happening again 😣it’s very intense and doesn’t really go, is this a thing with Peri? Bloody horrible

Yup - my cramps and flow got worse with peri. I went on the Mirena which has reduced both.

Thankyou I thought it must likely be related. The cramping is hideous and excessive! My body apparently hates me with a passion 😂

The last 6 mo my periods have become heavier, sorer, and longer. And I have developed pms which I’ve never had in my whole menstrual career 😟. Thanks perimenopause.

I’m relieved it’s probably normal but pretty fed up of the pain. Online it says the mini pill can help but since I’m already on it I’d say not!
painkillers and sulking it is

Yes. I’ve never had period cramps before but I now get agonising ones, even when my period does show up (some months it’s heavy and sometimes doesn’t happen at all but the cramps bloody do).

well I’ve been heavily bleeding since I made this post, it keeps slowing down and then starts heavy again. Is this standard or a GP thing? I work in a school so getting appointments is a nightmare

I would see your GP and request a referral to a gynaecologist. Bleeding on and off continuously is not normal.

If you can get a referral letter from your gp to see a gynae as a private patient for an initial consultation do so. I suggest this as waiting times for gynae in many areas are miles long.

Sux2buthen · 08/02/2026 18:39

I did wonder. It says online they might prescribe the mini pill but I’m already on that so guess that’s not going to help

Same. It’s absolutely rubbish. And throw in recurrent UTI’s here as well. It sucks.

This was standard for me when I got put on the mini pill. Breakthrough bleeding it's called. Though if it's a new thing for you I'd definitely try getting an appointment

ADHDFocusedLife · 09/02/2026 06:23

Yes, the mini pill can randomly do this, and peri can absolutely make things go a bit feral… but two months in a row of suddenly unbearable cramps isn’t something you should just “put up with”.

Sux2buthen · 09/02/2026 06:36

I’ve been on the mini pill for probably 15 years on and off and this is very new. Thankyou all, I will call tomorrow as today at work is brutal

That sounds a lot to me, I’d want it checked out.

Got blood tests, chest x ray and ultrasound within next two weeks. That was more thorough than I expected! Thanks for replies
