Well that's interesting, on the MRI i had before Christmas found my ovaries - the ones they took out in 2018!

So, what does that mean?

Not my MRI? Did they forget to take my ovaries out back in 2018?

Did they just tick things randomly?

Sign - it just came up on "My Chart" and of course its Saturday, so i can do nothing until Monday

"Ovaries : Both ovaries are laterally placed and atrophic."

No idea what's going on here, but very intrigued!

FloofyKat · 17/01/2026 19:26

Intriguing!,

Motnight · 17/01/2026 19:27

Gosh!!

Motnight · 17/01/2026 19:27

(my DH got given someone else's brain scan. He asked for a copy as he wanted to do something arty with it.)

MissMoneyFairy · 17/01/2026 19:30

Ooh. Maybe you had 4 and they removed 2. Is it definitely your scan, I'd get in touch with your GP.

FelicityBeedle · 17/01/2026 19:31

You could say they’re so atrophied they hardly exist

ForeverAndEverCheese · 17/01/2026 19:32

I’ve had comments on my ‘normal gallbladder’ … which has been removed.

helplessbanana · 17/01/2026 19:33

Atrophic means what's there has shrivelled away to practically nothing.

KatyMac · 17/01/2026 19:35

The rest of the scan seems pretty what I expected - damage from when I had an Ectopic back in 2000, incidental finding of a gallery stone (explains the pain ive been having even if its not in the typical place for my gall bladder)

Im translating the rest

i mean they do take them out rather than fry them right? I definitely had menopause after the op in 2018

OP posts:
laserme · 17/01/2026 19:36

I had that following a scan once - they rang me with the results concerned they couldn’t see my fallopian tubes on them….. I said I would hope you didn’t since I lost them both to ruptured ectopics the year before

I swear sometimes women’s anatomy just seems to stump many doctors and they need to go back to medical school

KatyMac · 17/01/2026 19:38

FelicityBeedle · 17/01/2026 19:31

You could say they’re so atrophied they hardly exist

But they are lateral so something is still there

Oops @Motnight

4! I had enough crap with 2 thanks uou @MissMoneyFairy

OP posts:
KatyMac · 17/01/2026 19:39

Ouch @laserme with tubes - I only lost one

OP posts:
laserme · 17/01/2026 19:39

Googling the term “atrophic” that does seem to also mean “insufficient” so covers removal?

MissMoneyFairy · 17/01/2026 19:39

Your post op letter should state what operation you had, maybe they are extra, maybe the radiologist is just not very good.

laserme · 17/01/2026 19:43

since ive fallen into a Google hole here - atrophic ovaries - diminished / shrunken does cause menopause so it’s possible they cut the blood supply to your ovaries rather than completely remove them?
was your ectopic an ovarian one? They may have just removed part of the ovary so that’s why I can seen on the MRI

ZookeeperSE · 17/01/2026 19:49

Is it maybe the case that oophorectomy can leave some ovarian tissue behind? Is that maybe what happened when you had yours removed? And it’s that that is now ‘atrophic’?

I’ve got this vague memory of my friend having her ovaries ‘out’ but then having to go back again years later to have more tissue removed for some reason.

KatyMac · 17/01/2026 19:50

My Ectopic was a tube burst and I lost part of one fallopian - 2000

My ovaries were removed because of a largish cyst - 2018

My airmid says salpingo-oophrectony (right) and partial saloingo-oophrectomy (left) which is the ectopic/damaged side

Im a bit calmer today, but I was quite upset yesterday

I won't ring first thing tomorrow, but i will ring the GP

OP posts:
KatyMac · 20/01/2026 09:08

GP says ring hospital, hospital says ring GP

So I'm assuming its some sort of drop down menu with standard phrases and the person had fat fingers

Update:

Before the weekend I spoken to the surgery (after a poor response to an e consult) & I had a discussion with HCP on Monday

She could see why I was somewhat unhappy with the mri & initiated a query

This appeared on my chart today

"Narrative & Impression

Addendum created at 05/03/2026 16:06:12:

Reported history of bilateral oophorectomy.
The right adnexa are not visualized consistent with history.
There is some residual tissue in the left adnexa which could just represent post surgical changes or remnant left fallopian tube."

I dont know how they could change their mind so easily

I can understand why you'd feel upset, OP. I mean, bloody hell, we are obliged to trust/believe these so called experts with our lives. If they don't know what they're doing, what hope is there?
I subscribe to the theory that in any profession, there are the good, bad and indifferent. You see it in policitions, shopkeepers, teaching, plumbers, etc etc...
it's a frightening thought. Think Boris, Liz Truss...

Greybeardy · 06/03/2026 15:17

this sounds like a really good example of why the appropriate clinical information should be on the referral for the scan. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to interpret some tests when you don't have all the relevant information. Glad it's all resolved.

Tonissister · 06/03/2026 15:33

My ivf notes got mixed up with a woman who had a similar name. Luckily I insisted on precise spelling and they realised the mistake, otherwise we may have accidentally been implanted with each other's embryos.

Thegoofylife · 06/03/2026 15:38

I’d go to PALS at hospital. I had a heart scan two years ago and was told I had a valve issue and this appeared on my medical notes and then I was discharged from the hospital with no explanation or seeing the consultant again. I wasn’t happy as the consultant had said to me before the scan/ the scan will be fine you are 50, non smoker and a women - women don’t really have heart issues! After the scan he discharged me. I insisted via pals and the hospital of seeing a female consultant who didn’t say such stupid things about women and yes I will need heart surgery in 5 years.

KatyMac · 06/03/2026 23:27

Actually @Greybeardy I discussed the surgery i'd had with the operators of the mri and it was on my notes from the ultrasound i'd had previously

Im thinking about pals
