Abnormal smear. Missed recall. 3 years ago

Been to the gp this week as had some abnormal bleeding since no periods in 2023. All peri menopause symptoms for the last 18 months, trialled hrt and didn’t get on with it. I manage them with supplements.

2020 I finally had a normal smear result and was put back to 3 yearly smears. I honestly can’t remember any time I had a Normal smear before that, I’ve had a few colonoscopies along the way.

2023 I had mirena fitted and a smear done at the same time. I should have been recalled after this one my gp told me yesterday and I wasn’t, so it’s nearly been 3 years! So I’m worrying silly now. I have female cancer in my family (ovarian) 2 x on my maternal side.

on top of this my immune system seems to be crappy atm and I’m catching every thing going. I’ve random bruising and tbh yesterday I felt quite dismissed my the gp. I had a smear done. And I requested blood tests. Which she told me to book in for in the “next few weeks” I’ve taken the forms and I’ll get someone in work to do them this weekend rather than waiting.

I mentioned I’d been thinking of a hysterectomy. Given my years of abnormal smears and female cancer being in the family, and already having all the menopause symptoms and was told not to jump the gun. I’ve had my children. They are grown up or in late teens now and I don’t want to spend my life back and forth to gynae appts tbh worrying myself silly!

Im turning 44 in a few weeks, a close friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with cancer after all her symptoms were put down to menopause.

how can I get them to take me seriously! If I had the funds I’d go private tbh

It’s not that they won’t take you seriously, it’s that the guidelines mean their hands are tied, I can’t see you getting a hysterectomy as a preventative for abnormal smear results.
It took me 6 years under gynae (after 10 years of suffering before I even got referred to gynae), and lots of tears and begging, to get one for fibroids and Endo that were so bad there were several days each month I couldn’t leave my house and had to miss work.
Health care for women is appalling. Men would not have to suffer so much, or for so long, if they had these issues. I really feel for you. Did the GP actually do a smear test? If it’s abnormal this time, and you are referred by to colposcopy, I’d make your case then when you see the gynaecologist.

Agree with above if this smear is abnormal and you get referred plead your case with gynae . Put a reminder on your phone for next smear date incase they forget to call you
