Gynae today

Gynae appointment this morning.
40 years old.
Last June & July I skipped periods,
(this has happened once in 2024 and once in 2023 but the next periods were always normal)
Then August I spotted for two weeks, and then straight into a two week period that was really heavy, with clots, and needing two or three sanitary products to get through a couple of hours. I just assumed it was because I’d missed two months and my lining had built up and had a load to shed.
September period arrived and was still heavy but much more manageable.
October period was extremely normal for me.
November nothing, missed again.
December came in and I started to spot, lightly and on and off for the first two weeks. Then at Christmas full force period, and it’s still going now Jan 13th, really heavy every day. I can manage, it’s not flooding out of my clothes but still needing to change products regularly and when I go for a wee, I always lose loads of blood that way too. Trying to walk for anything over an hour and I can just feel the pad and tampon are so heavy and full.

I had my last smear in Autumn ‘23 along with a pelvic ultrasound which were both fine. So due those again later this year.

Not on any contraception, my husband had a vasectomy around 8 years ago.

No achy boobs or usual pre period grumpiness. No pains or cramps or headaches.

Today I’d just like to get something to stop this bleed, and then I suppose go back and start investigating? Perhaps a Mirena if everything is clear. Fed up of periods but especially bleeding like this.

Would and bloods or scans be done if you are still bleeding? It’s a private gynae.

That sounds very difficult to be dealing with, hope you can get it sorted. I’d be asking for a full blood count inc iron panel, ferritin and transferrin level to check for anaemia and iron deficiency anaemia, in addition to something to stop the bleeding. Good luck!

GP can prescribe something like tranexamic acid. Ask (indust) for a referral for investigations, you may need to push for this. Are you taking iron? If not you probably should as you could be anaemic at this point.

mummytrex · 13/01/2026 07:16

*insist!

Note: My GP was quite dismissive when I had similar but had bled continuously for over 6 months with regular bouts of flooding. I ended up in a&e which literally saved my life and resulted in a referral and diagnosis for my issues which meant I could be treated.

mummytrex · 13/01/2026 07:27

Sorry ought to have said yes they can still do bloods and scans while you're bleeding.

mamatoTails · 13/01/2026 07:49

Thanks both, yes I will ask for bloods to include all iron related things too.
Just stopping this bleed would be great, then I don’t mind going back for further tests etc, but 5 weeks pretty much non stop bleeding is so draining.

So nervous, always think the worst!

The appointment was fine.
Had an internal scan and all looked fine. said as my smear is due this year to book in once bleeding has settled.
Lots of bloods booked in for later in the week.
She prescribed the POP for 6 months to try and regulate the bleeding.
Will see how it goes and hope to get blood results next week sometime.

Has menopause been considered? I would assume so? Bleeding can be all over the place during peri.

Biut also, I struggled with some on/off bleeding and the POP helped so good luck!

Thank you, really want this bleeding to stop so hoping the pill works!
She did say as the scan was clear then it is possibly due to age and perimenopause, but I have a load of bloods to do later this week and then will meet to discuss the results.

I had similar and it was due to peri menopausal bleeding. Around 20 percent of women get such bleeding. I found that tranexamic acid had no effect at all and in the end I had ablation surgery. Blood tests showed nothing of note.

How did you find the ablation surgery, successful?
I am hopeful this POP will work, if not I’ll go back and see what to try next, but I feel better now with the scan out the way.

Ablation worked in my case and I’ve had no problems with bleeding since.

In my case the Gp sent me for a blood test and when that came back normal, no further action was taken. After a very heavy bleed I in desperation phoned the local private hospital asking for a gynae appointment. I was prescribed northisterone and that stopped the bleeding until I ran out of tablets just before I was due in for ablation surgery. Further northisterone tablets were ineffective. My blood tests showed constant rises and falls of both progesterone and estrogen and that caused the constant bleeding. The gynae consultant wrote a letter of complaint to my gp surgery.

mamatoTails · 14/01/2026 10:59

Oh that’s awful! Blood tests aren’t always the most reliable!
glad you’re sorted now.

I took the first progesterone only pill yesterday and within 4 hours the bleeding had stopped, and last night I had such a good night sleep, woke up bursting with energy!
Hopefully it works well for me and I’ll continue to use it if it keeps the horrendous bleeding away.
