Bartholin Cyst Tips please

outdooorsy · 11/01/2026 21:50

I have a really painful bartholin cyst which I’ve had for years and years but it seems it got infected about 3 days ago. It’s excruciating when I pee. Been doing hot sitz baths for the last couple of days. It’s only the size of a pea but it still stings horribly when I pee and it’s generally really uncomfortable. It has a red head. Baths haven’t changed it. Ordered with hazel and tea tree as well as Epsom salts. Any tips? Should I see the GP or continue treating at home? Thanks.

You can get a thing that squirts water and use it while you pee. That should help with the stinging. Search for portable bidet.

Are you feeling well in yourself? No temperature or shivering?

rubyslippers · 11/01/2026 21:56

Go to the GP and get antibiotics

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 11/01/2026 21:59

Just keep going. Is it definitely a Bartholin? I occasionally get small lumps that get a head and drain. They aren’t bartholins though.

People use a water bottle to squirt while they wee, to stop the stinging of stitches.

Bluebunnylover · 11/01/2026 22:13

I had one and antibiotics cleared it up straight away. Recommend you see the gp

Laiste · 11/01/2026 22:24

Right. This is controversial advice but here goes:
I put Bonjela on mine (stung like fuck but then went numb) and jabbed a sterilised needle into it.

Squeezed, stabbed, squeezed - out came pus and instant relief. Put on soothing antiseptic cream and it never came back.

moolag · 11/01/2026 22:35

shit advice but I popped mine because I couldn’t take the pain anymore. It was heavenly watching all the pus etc coming out. The relief was insane and the memory of pus pouring out will stay with me forever. Bliss. Like squeezing a spot but a thousand times better. I just left it then and it healed itself.

thanks for the tip, I've ordered a peri bottle. No fever or shivers.

That's brave, I've read not to try a pop myself so I haven't even considered that. Partner suggested Bonjela actually but nobody online backed it up.

You should probably go to the GP/nurse and have it checked out. My sister had this once and I could see how much pain she was in. I hope you’re free of it soon!

MikeRafone · 12/01/2026 09:43

Put a hot flannel on mine, kept repeating and it dissolved it

that's probably good advice, I've been avoiding it because I went to the GP once about it and they didn't give me anything for it but maybe I should give them a call anyway.

Or just use a water bottle.

Hot compresses,have you tried that?

I would suggest Sudacreme or Savlon.

I did this, and also I rang 111 but don't do that.
This was on a Sat and they put me down for a phone call with the GP Hmm on the Monday which was completely useless - the GP said yes they DID need to see me and that was the Tuesday.
It had by then gone down thanks to the hot flannel but the GP said if it recurs they would give antibiotics.
Mine was definitely infected - I've had it several times before - pus filled. GP said it could have been a hair follicle but they still get infected and need to be seen.
Next time I'll send a message to the GP, we can be seen same day if a weekday through that.

Luluco · 12/01/2026 09:52

I’ve had one before and you’ll need antibiotics for it. Mine cleared up quickly with the medication.

moolag · 12/01/2026 09:56

Also, this may not be the case for you, but I’d never had them in my life until I had the implant. Then I developed 2 within the space of a couple of months. I had the implant remover a few years ago, and I’ve never had them since.

I had loads in my 20s when I'd never used hormonal contraception and still have them now post menopause. Sorry!

@Luluco after mine burst when I used the hot flannel the GP said it had cleared up ok. Sorry
Worth a try before you get a GP appointment.

With regards to bonjela ... my reasoning was that if it's ok in your mouth on sore bits it would prob be ok on your inner lower lips! Not quite in and not quite out .... 🧐

Like i say i'm not recommending it exactly - but i'm a stab it and squeeze it and see sort of person. I was all set up on the bed with a good light and a good magnifying mirror and very clean hands and clean needle and tissues ect. And a strictly Do Not Disturb instruction given to the family !

drspouse · 12/01/2026 15:32

The NHS advice is strictly DO NOT SQUEEZE. I didn't dare!

Sister from another mother 🤣
I too am a fan of what we call in my house, ‘teaspoon surgery’.
High pain threshold, little tolerance for inconvenience. Do all the hot cloth, Epsom salt bath stuff then go for it.

Don't press or squeeze, pull the sides away. It encourages the top to open if it wants to without pushing infection deeper. And hurts much less. Either it will or it isn’t ready. Sterilised needle or scissor blade is an option only for the foolhardy me.

sheepandbear · 12/01/2026 18:40

I have this sporadically and have always managed to sort it in a few days with the warm sitz baths, regular (as often as you can) hot flannels pressed quite hard and keeping it as clean and free of irritation as possible. Loose trousers, clean pjs around the house and absolutely no leggings, tight jeans or anything that risks rubbing.
It’s really awful though so hope it’s better soon and see a GP if it lasts much longer.

OMG…that sounds horrific…but must admit doing it myself in the past!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 12/01/2026 22:03

DO NOT DO THIS!
I used to get two, one either side. This was in the early 80s, I was really young, had a horrible horrible dr i would not go to if my head was coming off, never mind examining my bits. Dear god, the pain. I did the hot bath and needle. Almost passed out with pain. I then had a punctum where it would pop the next time. Funnily enough vanished without trace after kids.
Get to doctor, get antibiotics.

dinodiva · 12/01/2026 22:18

GP, definitely. I’ve had one twice. First time it cleared up with antibiotics, second time I had to have it drained in hospital, but it was the size of a large walnut.
