Post sex Antibiotics for UTI

Good morning.
I have always been prone to UTIs (not something that has occured with age) and sex is almost always to blame (I stay very hydrated through the day, take cranberry capsules etc , pee after sex )
Antibiotics work straught away but I have read that 1 tablet within 2 hours after sex (not AB everyday) can prevent them in the first place.
I have sent a request to GP but told it is not an emergency (understand this) and will be dealt with in due course.
I am starting to dread sex now :(
I would be keen to hear of anyone else who has had success with this and did you have a battle with a GP to prescribe in this way. I know AB resistance is a BIGGIE .
Thanks in advance.

I was prescribed this but it was via a urologist and sadly I had to pay to see him in the end.
Had a scan, turns out my bladder/cervix are in an odd position so if there is any pressure on my cervix, bladder gets knocked about and hello UTI.
I was prescribed an antibiotic called nitrofurantoin to take an hour before sex. It has worked in that I’ve never had a UTI as s result which is a bonus.
My real issue was my DH who complained it took away the element of things being spontaneous. Then I’d reply would he rather I was doubled up in pain for days after?
While the medication was effective it has always left me with an upset stomach so the next day I’d be on the loo for hours, not fun.
It is odd that a GP might refuse and yet you can now get antibiotics for a UTI directly from a pharmacist without seeing a GP at all. There don’t seem to be concerns with resistance being an issue there.
I would go in and see your GP armed with facts and explain how you feel.
Obviously, if you want have sex every day it’s not a good idea to be taking a tablet a day.
I think I paid about £400 privately in the end and that was about 12 years ago and believe me I’m not well off, it was a stretch.

In my thirties I had a year or so where I kept getting recurrent UTIs and my NHS GP prescribed Trimethoprim to take every time I had sex. He said if it didn’t work, we’d try a six month course of antibiotics. It did work, thankfully! I do still get the occasional UTI but nothing like that year.

Thanks for your replies.
I have had scans on kidneys and urology did a camera up there (nothing amiss)
Yes, my recent AB have been via the pharmacy (no GP appointment )
I have had triptethan (sp) previously and that upset my stomach but Niatrafurn does not.
I will definitely persist with GP armed with facts.
Failing that, I guess I can feign an infection with the pharmacy (previously they go on symptoms no urine test) and get 3 days worth (6 tablets) which will give me 6 sex sessions. Sounds crude I know.

You could see a pharmacist and tell them you have a UTI at present, you know the symptoms, they will prescribe a 3 day (6tablets) course of nitrofurantion, then you can see if this works for you. Obviously not recommended if you are having sex a lot, but you would have thought 1/2 tablets a month would be ok. I would certainly give it a try.

They are SO unpleasant. My mum got a lot, so hereditary perhaps !

Have you tried D Mannose? I know people who've been able to ditch the endless rounds of ABs after taking those daily.

I had problems with recurring utis for years and I had worked out that it was related to sex.
My gp prescribed Nitrofuratoin, 1 tablet to be taken after sex.
I have been taking them for the last 7ish years and have had no problems since. I do worry a bit about having to take them so much. But I’m too nervous to come off them in case the utis come back.

This is promising. Thanks . Was it a battle getting the GP on board?

Yes. It is about as effective as cranberry but more expensive

I take a post aex antibiotics. Been doing it for a long while now and touch wood, it's still working. Only suffered one UTI whilst on them and I'm not 100% sure that I didn't forget to take it that time.

Prescribed by my GP. No it wasn't a battle. After I'd been back to them numerous times. Crying as I seemed to get a UTI pretty much every time I had sex. The GP suggested the prophylactic antibiotic themselves.

Davetrevorfinn · 24/12/2025 16:53

I would look into seeing if you can get hiprex prescribed. It is not an antibiotics so no risk of resistance but it works well for preventing uti's.

Aworldofmyown · 24/12/2025 16:56

Have you tried going to the bathroom straight after and dousing with water when on the toilet. I do this and only get a UTi if I dont.

No it was my gp who suggested it. Definitely worth a conversation. It was a female gp who prescribed, I don’t know if that made a difference? She said she understood how awful it is to deal with.

diggermama · 24/12/2025 19:04

Can be a romance killer but I shower before, drink water with d mannose before then guaranteed to have a good flush out when I pee after sex. I’ve also discovered that position helps a lot, if I’m on top then I don’t really get a uti, however if DH is on top then I find germs errmm ‘travel up’. I did once have an awful uti that lingered and actually discovered homeopathy for uti’s, that might be worth looking into

MrsM2025 · 24/12/2025 19:23

I have found that going for a wee straight after sex really really helps!

tinyspiny · 24/12/2025 19:26

I’ve had ABs prescribed for this reason and it worked fairly well , dmannose does nothing for me at all .My GP is pretty good about this sort of thing
