Possible arthritis in thumb joint

RubyRubie · 16/12/2025 19:58

I work as an admin worker and recently my thumb joint has been very painful. I feel it’s come on quick and I probably need to see my doctor. Just wondering if anyone has had this, so any advice welcome?

I’m unsure whether to take time off work, to stay at work but tell the manager, any advice welcome. Thank you.

I don't think you can take time off work fir a painful thumb. If you think it's work related eg keyboarding, maybe try not using the thumb for a while. I guess if you have had it for a month or so maybe speak with your doctor.

I get RSI in my thumbs from how I use my phone. Rest makes it better (I do stuff with my index finger when I remember.) Could it be that?

Best to get it investigated, if you get a diagnosis, you can ask your employer for reasonable adjustments if it would help, if you don't already have such things as gel wrist pads. Maybe speak with Occy Health too?(ex workplace union rep needing reasonable adjustments myself)

I saw a doctor talking on morning tv about pain at base of thumb, it’s really common and he said the best cure was to exercise it by movement of just the thumb, it worked for me. There is a name for it, but I can’t remember. It didn’t stop me doing anything and I can’t now open jars whereas before I just couldn’t grip.
