Urgent colposcopy appointment with no smear results

Hi all,

I think I am seeking reassurance more than anything as I feel all over the place at the moment.
I had a smear test just over 4 weeks ago, my previous smear was in 2022. Today, out of the blue, I’ve received a phone call from the women’s health unit at my local hospital asking me to go for a colposcopy appointment in 2 days time.
I was a bit blindsided by this as I haven’t even received the results of my smear yet, either by post or on my NHS app. I asked for some more information but was met with ‘I don’t know I just make the appointments, speak to your GP’.
Spoke to the GP receptionist who said that the doctor hasn’t even interpreted the results yet so they can’t even tell me what the problem is. She said that the referral has likely been done by whoever processed the sample.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I am freaking out and thinking of every worst possible case scenario. I have an 18 month old son and I am terrified.

Hey, I understand you’re freaking out but being referred this quickly is about checking things early, not because something serious has been found. Most women who go to colposcopy don’t need major treatment, and it’s very normal to be referred before seeing your actual smear results. Call the colonoscopy unit tomorrow and tell them you haven’t received your smear results and they’ll hopefully be able to offer more reassurance. Big 🤗 x

I had to go for a colposcopy after my last smear, As the nurse hadn’t managed to actually collect the cells necessary for a conclusive smear.

Thanks for the reply-my results letter came today saying that I have high grade severe dyskaryosis. I’m hoping that at my appointment tomorrow they can just remove whatever is there and I can try to breathe a bit easier and get on with Christmas!

I had this procedure over 20 years ago to remove abnormal cells found after smear test. It’s a painless procedure as you are given local anesthetic and they burn off the cells, it took around 20 minutes, legs up in stirrups. I was in a bit of pain once anesthetic wore off and had the next day off work and rested, but I was fine with a couple of paracetamol. I had another smear test 6 months later and yearly smears for 5 years, which were fine. They said if any cells needed a biopsy they would do it then, but they said they got them all. Good luck.

I had the same happen, I was called in for a colposcopy after a smear, they had found abnormal cells, I went in the next day as I already had an appointment in gynaecology for something else. When in there I was told it looked like I had CIN2 or 3, they took a biopsy and rushed through the results (as I was booked in for surgery/hysterectomy 10 days later). I tried not to panic as I was having surgery anyway. Anyway my biopsy came back clear, not even CIN1, just HPV present.

The procedure itself is a little uncomfortable but wasn’t the worst, a bit more uncomfortable than a smear. The worst bit is waiting for the results because it can take a couple weeks.
