Possible breast lump

I am probably being daft as I’m pretty sure I have a lump in my breast but I’m dithering about going to the GP. The lump feels hard and can’t be moved, but I can only really feel it when lying on my back with my arm raised i.e. it’s quite deep in my breast. This is making me think it may just be a normal part of my anatomy (muscle?) although the other one doesn’t feel the same.

Both breasts are quite lumpy overall, which is another reason I am doubting if this needs looking at. I don’t want to waste a GP appointment if this is just a normal feature of my body.

Can anyone share any experience or advice that might help?

You know you need to make the appointment. Do it. It's probably just fibrous tissue, but it might not be and you can't tell by just poking it.

madamegazelle1 · 09/12/2025 23:00

You are never wasting an appointment with a breast lump- most turn out to be nothing to worry about but we need the professionals to make that call. Your GP will refer you to the breast clinic as only they can do the investigations needed to see what it is. Please call your GP tomorrow- the sooner you call the sooner you will get to the bottom of it

Thank you both. I went to the GP this morning and am now waiting for an appointment at the breast clinic.

You have absolutely done the right thing in going to see the GP. I know it’s a scary thing to have to go through but far better safe than sorry. The vast majority of lumps in breasts are benign.

I'm in the same position as you and waiting for the clinic to call. I hope that I haven't dithered for too long.

Good luck GenericDietCola

Ok I was someone who thought “it was nothing”. Fortunately DP harassed me so much to go to the GP that I just gave in and went to stop him going on.
Thank God I did. Last month I was diagnosed with Grade 1 breast cancer. Caught early enough that with a lumpectomy, some radiotherapy in the new year and anti hormone meds, I should be all ok.
The consultant and nurse said that I’m I. A really good position in terms of my diagnosis because we moved early.
Go and get it checked out. I went to the GP on Oct 9th and had my lumpectomy on December 4th. The NHS have been amazing and I’m feeling positive.
I dread to think how I would be feeling if I had news that my cancer was too far advanced. Please go.

LoudSnoringDog · 10/12/2025 11:45

Ah just seen that you have booked appt! That’s good 🤞

GenericDietCola · 10/12/2025 12:01

Thanks! I think my biggest fear was that I was somehow imagining it. Yes I know I am silly! Anyway, the GP felt the lump too and said it was advisable to get it checked out, so I’m glad I went.

Best wishes to you @LoudSnoringDog - glad it was found and treated promptly. @UrbanFan i hope your appointment is soon and that all is well.

I went to the breast clinic with what I thought was a lump in my left breast. Had mammogram followed by ultrasound on both breasts. Left breast was fine but something was showing in my right breast. I had a biopsy followed by lumpectomy and my lump ended up being a benign tumour which did have to be removed as with this type of tumour they can grow quite quickly. I know this is a petrifying time but please hold on to the thought that just because there is a lump there DOES NOT mean it’s cancer.

madamegazelle1 · 10/12/2025 15:50

Thats great you got a Drs apt and they have referred you. Fingers crossed your apt comes through soon and you get the all clear. Like others have said early detection is crucial and if it is something then at least you will know and can get on with sorting it. Keep us posted X

It’s taken 4 weeks but I finally have my appointment tomorrow. Have spent Christmas veering from ‘it’ll all be fine’ to ‘it’s definitely cancer’. Hoping to get at least a good idea of the diagnosis tomorrow.

How are you @UrbanFan @LoudSnoringDog and @Benjithedog ?

All good here thank you. I’m crossing everything that all will be okay at your appointment tomorrow. If you can please do let us know how the appointment went. They are generally excellent in the breast clinic and they will take care of you. Xxx

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 05/01/2026 23:21

Please make an appointment with your GP. Most breast lumps are not cancer but the sooner you’re checked the better. Some posters on the cancer threads ignored a breast lump for months to their cost.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, via a routine mammogram. My tumour was 24mm and could not be felt, even by my surgeon. I’ve had surgery, radiotherapy and I’m now on estrogen suppressants.

madamegazelle1 · 06/01/2026 13:33

I hope your appointment goes well today X

GenericDietCola · 06/01/2026 17:58

It was benign, big relief!

W great news- so pleased for you! Well done for going and putting your mind at rest X

Benjithedog · 06/01/2026 22:06

Fantastic news. I’m so very pleased for you.

Plankton89 · 11/01/2026 12:08

@GenericDietCola could o please ask what it was ? I have the exact same thing , small hard lump, deep down, can only be felt when lying down. I’m going to call
up for an appt tmrw but I didn’t sleep at all last night. I also have very lumpy dense breasts. It is a nightmare.

GenericDietCola · 11/01/2026 12:23

I’m sorry you’re going through this @Plankton89 - mine is apparently age-related changes to the breast tissue, which causes hard lumps to form. I hope yours is something benign too.

OP posts:
Plankton89 · 11/01/2026 14:55

Thank you. Im 40 so it could be that. I don’t like the fact that’s it’s so close to my chest wall. It’s utterly utterly shit having lumpy breasts. I have just read that cysts deeper in the breasts tend to feel harder, so I’m clinging on to that :) I’m glad yours turned out to be benign.

UrbanFan · 15/01/2026 10:09

Mine turned out to be calcified fat cells. Probably from previous knocks. Was a relief to find out what they were and be told no cancer cells at all,
