hottentot · 20/11/2025 15:43

Hi

I have had a blood test and my ferritin levels are 30 with the suggestion

Serum ferritin - (HSM) - normal - may benefit from iron supp otc for hair regrowth

Has anyone had success taking supplements or an infusion?

Thanks in advance

My levels got to 3 before I was offered an infusion, and that was also because I'd had stomach surgery and can't absorb iron very well. It's very area-dependent.

I live in the south east if that helps!

Mine also got to 3 but I was told I wasn't eligible for a transfusion. Who knows why!? I took prescribed ferrous fumarate for 6 months and have taken a supermarket iron supplement for nearly a year and it's now 49.

My GP said it should be between 70 and 100 to feel normal.

Blimey, a year and still below the levels. Why do GPs allow this for women?

Are you feeling better?

It took me a good few years to get things leveled out. It was so frustrating. Not sure if I actually absorbed the oral iron. But I took advice from a friend and ate lots of eggs and spinach and it did help x

It's terrible isn't it. I've been fobbed off with 'you're a mum, of course you're tired' but now my youngest is 18 months the GP is finally actually investigating why I feel so rubbish. Currently having loads of tests done. I've got a GP at the moment who makes all my appointments with her so she can see that I'm not improving, that's made a difference instead of seeing a new GP each time.

Mine is 27 and my docs don't seem to care. It's shit.

cabjlhbojhs · 20/11/2025 16:20

Mine has been between 12 and 40 for the last six years. Doctors don't seem to care about ferritin.

Mine seems on the ball too 🎉

Waiting to see her in a couple of weeks to discuss it!

Grovee will try this too 😊

Mine was down to 2 and I was given tablets! This was 20yrs ago and abroad though (but a very modern health system). I was offered an iron injection, not an infusion, but an injection of iron into the muscle. If not injected correcting though, it can leave black dots on the skin like a tattoo. My colleague had them and had black speckles on her buttocks where they'd been injected 😬

Anyways, you can likely get an infusion privately, otherwise it takes 3mths for red blood cells to replicate and it will slowly improve with tablets. Improving diet, having Vit C rich food/drinks with the meds helps absorption whereas tannin rich food depletes it. There is also a vast different between OTC iron tablets and the prescribed dose.

I am thinking of an infusion- any positive experiences?
