Mirena incorrectly sited on ultrasound, strings can't be visualised - experiences?

I had a mirena inserted about 2 and a half years ago - I'd had really heavy flooding and awful periods before that, and was found to have a polyp. They removed the polyp and inserted the mirena under general anaesthetic. Since then, I've had pretty light periods, but about four months ago they became really irregular (bleeding for weeks and weeks at a time although lightly), and have recently become heavier (although not as bad as before the coil).

I had an ultrasound last week and they think the mirena may be incorrectly sited now (it was fine last year as I had a scan due to strings not being seen and they said it was in place). Was all a bit weird, they said they couldn't visualise one of the arms, and on some views they thought it was out of place but on other views they weren't so sure. GP is quite confused by the report too, said it wasn't totally clear what was going on.

I've been referred to gynaecology to discuss having it removed - does anyone have experience of a similar situation where the placement of it was unclear and they couldn't locate the strings?

They also found a small fibroid on the scan, and I had a funny thyroid blood result (could show subclinical hyperthyroidism), so there are multiple possible things going on, and I'm reluctant to have it removed if it may possibly be in the right position and something else is the cause for the bleeding issues. Also slightly terrified of what the removal may entail given they can't see the strings 🙈

Any reassurance or relevant experiences gratefully received!
