Took morning after pill, still 5 days late. Is this normal?

Just wanted to see if any other women have taken the morning after pill before and been late on a period or even skipped a whole period? Not sure if it’s worth me taking a pregnancy test at this point.

I am married with 2 children, but I only had my youngest in July so I definitely do not need to be pregnant again and have another baby so soon after giving birth! It was a silly mistake that happened without me and my husband thinking about it, I must go on contraception asap I just hate contraception so much and need to find one that does not mess with my hormones too much.

I took the morning after pill and it failed. I didn’t realise the effectiveness reduces the longer you leave it to take it. My slip up happened on a Saturday night and I took the MAP on the Monday. Sorry my experience isn’t more positive for you.

If you've missed your period I'd test. The MAP is only effected if ovulation hasn't already started.

MiniJellyBeans · 14/11/2025 12:08

Oral emergency contraception works by delaying ovulation, which is why it’s only effective if taken before ovulation. This means after taking EC your period can be up to a week late, but it’s still definitely worth doing a pregnancy test, which should be done three weeks after the unprotected sex to be fully relied on.

My morning after pill fail is 15. I took it about 50 hours after the fact, but I suspect I’d already ovulated, which means it wouldn’t work anyway. I’d take a test if I were you.

The MAP is totally ineffective if ovulation has already occured, this should be made clear when it is prescribed but is rarely the case. Take a pegnancy test. Once this is all sorted, get a copper coil, or send your husband for a vasectomy, you and your body has already done its bit.

Coconutter24 · 14/11/2025 13:09

Where are you in your cycle? If you’ve already ovulated then the MAP will be no good and you could still end up pregnant. I did take it once and it did mess my cycle up for a few months with late periods

AnotherEmma · 14/11/2025 13:15

Take a pregnancy test.

What day of your cycle was it that you had unprotected sex? And how soon afterwards did you take the MAP?

Not sure which contraceptive methods you've tried before, but if you haven't already tried and hated the copper coil, it can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted less than 5 days after unprotected sex.

thought I would reply to you all to see what you all think…. I had JUST had my period, pretty much come off the day before I had unprotected sex which was Sunday 20th October very late in the evening, I took the morning after pill (EllaOne) on Tuesday 22nd around 11am. What do youse all think?

It could be that the pill delayed ovulation and worked doing what it needed to do but by doing that it also delayed your period because ovulation was later, if you see what I mean

There was a large study done during the second world war when they had a huge data set of women having sex during very narrow windows of time when husband were home on brief periods of leave, what it showed was that women can ovulate on ANY day of the cycle and conceive, just that the statistically most likely day to ovulate is day 14.

Nobody can know when you ovulated. Take a pregnancy test.
