Migraine / eye issues - HRT?

I started taking oestrogen in May following a hysterectomy earlier in the year. I had been on (cyclical) progesterone for some time before the hysterectomy and had no issues with it. From May to August, I felt pretty good with introducing oestrogen cyclically. In August, Ihad an illness and began to feel absolutely dreadful afterwards, multiple hot flushes each night, palpitations, terrible fatigue etc amongst other things. My doctor suggested I increase the oestrogen and started to take it daily rather than cyclically. She thought the consistency would help. I did this and in a few weeks I started to feel worse. I developed headaches and they ranged in severity from daily mild headache to intense migraine with aura. I realised quite quickly it was probably the HRT and went back to my doctor. They told me to reduce the oestrogen again or to stop it completely. I have reduced it and things are slightly improving but it's definitely still not better. The symptoms I have are complete screen intolerance and intolerance to bright lights at times. Occasionally I can use screens but it's very short-lived, e.g. 10 minutes. I can't watch TV for example. This is incredibly difficult for life and work ( i can hardly work). I also have an intolerance to general kind of visual movement, e.g. movement on TV or also if something is bouncing up and down, my brain doesn't seem to be able to handle it. It feels a bit like vertigo. Has anyone else experienced anything like this when starting HRT? I can't decide whether it is worth carrying on and seeing if it begins to improve. It has slightly improved since I reduced the dose. Or better to just give up completely. However, I did have symptoms before I started it - obviously, that's why I started it and I am worried that they will return with a vengeance. If I am not on a screen symptoms are much much reduced, I feel mostly OK but if I do something that involves a lot of eye focus eg driving / reading it can also flare up the eye pressure / pain / headache.

Any advice?

For clarity - I now use 1/2 pump oestrogel a day and I use 1 capsule of progesterone too. I don't have a womb now but I had endometriosis and so have been advised I need to continue taking that in case the oestrogen stimulates it.

Switch to Orstrogen patch & cut in half

Have you seen an optician?

Interesting but why? Is the patch better?

Did you suffer with migraine before? Because some HRT isn't suitable for migraine sufferers (discovered this when I developed ice pick headaches).

No I’ve never had them before.

Any histamine issues at all? Half a pump might be too much.

Interesting about histamines, not usually for my eyes. I do not have allergies as such but haven’t found I can react to certain foods eg tomatoes make my skin slightly itchy. Also some foods can make me nauseous sometimes eg tuna (which I know is high histamine). But I never have historically had any eye related symptoms from say hayfever etc.

i don’t think I could take less than half a pump though it’s impossible really. The lowest dose is 1 pump and I’m already taking half of that but maybe I just need to take none at all. That seems at odds with all the other symptoms I had before though which were definitely a sign I think of low oestrogen so the GP said - hot night sweats, itchiness, dry skin, aching joints, brain fog and not able to focus so well on conversation etc.

Hrt made my migraines horrific
So much so I ended up on injections
Just not worth it

I have severe migraine and need enough HRT to prevent hot flushes to stop the hormonal migraine.

Have you been taking the progesterone all along? I have read before that progesterone can help with meno symptoms and is often prescribed first in the US. Over here is usually only prescribed to prevent the womb lining from building up and usually not if someone has had a hysterectomy unless they had endometriosis (and sometimes not even then, which is crazy!).

I wonder if double dose progesterone would help you. If you could even get anyone to prescribe. It controls oestrogen and controls histamine. Oestrogen and histamine make each other worse.

I wonder if you changed to a patch if you'd be less efficient at absorbing it than gel. You could cut a 25 patch in half.

There's definitely something off balance.

You could also experiment with anti histamines and avoiding high histamine food.

Sorry, wiped out for a few days by another migraine! So yes I do take progesterone however had some issues recently with the type (new non branded type didn’t agree with me) so missed it for a week and this was all around the start of migraine hell so it could have been that that kicked it off.

im back doing low histamine now but haven’t yet noticed a correlation there but agree my body is now probably just highly sensitive to everything.

Going on the progesterone only contraceptive pill completely stopped my migraines and I was getting 3 a week in my 40s. Strongly believe that it helps to stop migraines and what you say here would seem to add credence to that.

Keep an eye on blood pressure, i thought i had a migraine, my blood pressure spiked so high they thought I had a stroke. I hadn't but im at risk until its under control.
