Freaking out over internal ultrasound

Hi all
I’ve had a weird niggling tender point on my right lower abdomen for a while. Doesn’t really hurt but is tender when I press it. I saw my GP who referred me for a gynae ultrasound. I had to have an abdominal and internal ultrasound (transvaginal). The sonographer asked if I get any pain on my left side, to which I replied I didn’t. Obviously the scan was for the right side, so this has worried me. Can anyone shed any light what this might mean? I’m thinking all the worst things. I stupidly asked if there was anything to worry about but she said they can’t give results (obviously). I’m 36. Many thanks

Could be a minor cyst they’ve seen

RoeDeer86 · 07/11/2025 14:21

Thank you. Would they ask if I get pain though? I thought cysts were often painless

It’s a small cyst that they will recheck basically
some absorb, and are normal for ones in your cycle to appear and then vanish

I wouldn’t be the slightest bit concerned honestly

my scan results were horrendous with 6 cysts, the biggest was 15cm plus adhesions everywhere and it got worse between the scan and surgery (endometriosis)

prior to that I did have a cyst which was like yours, they rescanned me and it vanished by itself

They might also do a CA125 blood test, don’t panic yourself by googling it

As it’s a cyst the pain you are feeling is probably after the cyst has ruptured and whilst the fluid is being reabsorbed. The niggling pain on one side you describe fits with my experience as well.

It sounds like one of these. So they are going to keep a watching eye on it by the sound of it?

Hi OP, I had a scan after an MC and they found a 5cm cyst on 1 ovary. The sonographer asked if I'd had any pain on one side then pushed down very firmly- but I hadnt. Well, there was pain from the MC but I couldnt say that side was any worse. It hadn't been there before because I'd had lots of scans. She said that woman gets cysts often which generally just go on their own, but unless you happened to be scanned every month- you'd never know.

I too have a retroverted uterus. You might already be aware that its still normal, just flipped slightly to the back rather than flipped to the front. A midwife once told me to always ask for a long speculum during smears, because its makes the cervix easier to see. They'd always struggled before.

Sorry, back to my cyst. I had a repeat ultrasound 6 weeks later and it was completely gone! I thought nothing of it and it wasn't seen on further scans till about 5yrs later when I was having IVF. That time, they called it an endometrioma or chocolate cyst. I've never had endo, always regular periods, rarely any period pain etc so was shocked that apparently now I had endo on 1 ovary! I have no idea if it was related to that 5cm cyst or not. I also thought you were born with endo, I never realised it could suddenly start on your 30's! Each scan showed then same, then strangely, the last one I had didn't show it at all- so I honestly have no idea what it is/was?

Hopefully yours will just go like mine did and no occurrence etc. I agree with another poster that they are normally only painful when they burst.

Thanks everyone :)

@Psithurism the weird tender spot is on the right, but closer to my belly button. It’s just tender when you press it. The sonography didn’t even get to it when she did the first trans abdominal scan, but had said to let her know when she was over it - she changed to the internal one before I could tell her. Apparently the former scan is normal so hopefully that was in the field of vision.

@TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams I thought that too. The GP very helpfully replied to my request and texted me. She said these cysts aren’t unusual findings and they usually do another scan in 12 weeks to see if it’s resolved. She said if there’s anything untoward (indicating cancer or something serious), the report usually has lots of stars and highlighting to draw their attention to it. That made me feel a bit of relief!

@JDM625 thank you for sharing your story 🫂

I didn’t realise that about endo either?! Glad your cyst resolved in the end. I thought I read that endometriomas (chocolate cyst) could resolve spontaneously as well so maybe it was one of those!

Thank you for the tip about smear tests - yet another mountain to climb once I’ve sorted this. I swear birth trauma just makes you never want anyone to look down there again 🙈

I did think it was weird that the sonographer asked if I had any pain on that side and when I said no, went “hmm”. I’d always read that they were often painless unless they’d ruptured. I’d scared myself with the “low level echoes” finding as well! Sometimes Google is not our friend, even if we stick to reputable sources!

Thank you so much everyone ♥️
