First Day on Fluoxetine for PMDD

It's only taken me 2 months to not chicken out and actually start taking the fluoxetine I've been prescribed for PMDD. Thought I'd maybe start a thread for anyone else struggling with PMDD/taking Fluoxetine.

I'm feeling a tad nervous about how it's going to make feel/side effects but trying to stay positive that it'll work for me and in a few weeks I might feel like an actual human!?

I had PMDD before I knew it had a name. Fluoxetine changed my life, made me the person I always knew I could be, the person I already was for about half the month.

It did affect my concentration a bit, made it harder to read books or complicated stuff for work so be prepared for that. I just had to learn to slow down in that regard, not to get impatient with myself or frightened (which I was at first) when I didn't take in information as quickly as I was used to.

Overall, it was wonderful. I was happy & the most normal I've ever been. Best of luck with it 👍

@Gotback Thanks so much 😊 day 1 has been good so far

I've been really over thinking it all. Worried I might have a bad reaction to it (previously took a different antidepressant many moons ago and it was awful) But also so hopeful that this will be the beginning of feeling and being a better person, Mum, partner

Hi,

I hope you don't mind me jumping on your post... I've just started one myself and awaiting replies.

Do you think this could be PMDD.

I had my DD 3 years ago, I've always had heavy period, 14 day break then 7 day bleed. I've never had any PMS symptoms, I was just also lacking iron.

I had my period 10 days postpartum and it was heavier, I expected that but I started to have mood swings (depression, irritable, rage, feeling worthless and that no one would miss me).

I was diagnosed with post natal depression and PTSD which I had counselling from and was in a good place. I've now started to notice a pattern, 1 week before my period is due I just lose the plot. The depression starts the intense rage and anger etc, it honestly terrifies me. The week of my period I non-stop cry and convince myself I should give up custody of my daughter because she can do better without me. My period stops and I'm suddenly me again.

Hey @Lillie1986 sorry I've only just seen this!

Obviously I can't diagnose but my symptoms for PMDD are about 1-2 weeks prior to my period (each month can vary) I get severe depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, feel very apathetic. I could pack up my life and disappear tbh. It's almost impossible to do normal things at times and has impacted my relationships as I'm very low on patience, very quick to anger and generally don't want to be near anyone during those weeks but as soon as a I start my period I feel normal again.

I'd say if you think it might be PMDD I can definitely recommend fluoxetine, this month has been so much better for me since starting it. I've had some mild PMT but nothing to the scale of last month or previous years. The only side effect I've had is some acid reflux but that's it

I used to have bad PMDD and Fluoxetine helped hugely. It does make you feel a bit odd at first but after a week or so all side effects settled down. I would definitely recommend

Gotback · 04/12/2025 21:43

Hey Ladybird, really glad it's going so well 💐

ladybird30 · 13/12/2025 18:52

@bluejelly Yes, I found the first 3 weeks or so I felt a lot more low and anxiety was higher, I also felt a bit wired but all of that has completely settled. I'm actually feeling really good. I still have moments but I'm finding it a lot easier to come out of them quickly which has been a game changer for everything to be honest!

@Gotback Thank you 😊 I really feel it's a game changer for me and I wonder why I didn't do it sooner!
