Pregnant with non stop thrush!

Hi, i am 12 weeks pregnant and i have had thrush on and off for 4 years. Since becoming pregnant i have had constant thrush. It has been tried to be treated with 500mg clotrimazole for 7 nights twice so far. Before that i had to argue with GP’s to even get 200mg for 3 nights. I will give a bit more backstory, i have actually had thrush that lasted for an entire year in 2018, i didn’t get it checked because i was young and too scared to get looked at so i was prescribed 6 months of clotrimazole which completely fixed it for around another year. Then i got occasional thrush which cleared with fluconazole. Fast forward to my first pregnancy where everything was perfect then a year later i had constant thrush, i used fluconazole for 6 months which was a massive mistake as it caused non stop itching and inflammation on my vulva. Now, i feel like clotrimazole pessaries are also causing thrush and it is what is recommended in pregnancy (i wouldnt use fluconazole again anyway after the pain it caused for 6 months straight and doctors said was anxiety, which i know it isnt 🙄) My symptoms for my entire pregnancy so far has been redness all over, razor blades cutting into me when i walk type sensation and occasionally burning when i pee. I have tried everything, cotton underwear, sleeping naked, no soap inside or out, no sugar in diet, probiotics, giving my partner thrush meds. Nothing has worked, i am in so much pain everyday. Thank you for reading my rant ❤️ i forgot to say that no matter what i always ask for swabs when asking for medication and it has always came back positive for thrush and nothing else and i have been checked for diabetes and i am fine.

I swear by optibac probiotic. It’s pricey but the only thing that kept it at bay during my pregnancies. You take it daily.

As to the clotrimazole - you need a higher dose in pregnancy (I was told this and prescribed by a GP, albeit privately)

@TY78910that is the probiotic i have used for 2 months and i was given 7 500mg clotrimazole tablets on two seperate occasions which is the recommended amount for pregnancy. Im at a loss, none of the medication has done anything. I have had culture swabs that say it is the common thrush and i have had swabs to check for everything under the sun with only thrush coming back positive

Ah OP, I have no advice, but solidarity, as I also had thrush the entirety of my pregnancy and it's SO uncomfortable and painful due to all the swelling, and you're swollen anyway due to hormonal changes! Have you asked the midwives for advice?

The only thing that got rid of it for me was my damn period coming back!

Jenny124501 · 30/10/2025 00:16

@LadamesansmerciThe midwife said ask the GP and the GP have been so dismissive, i just moved from a brilliant GP to a really crappy one, its always a man and he always offers the wrong medication so i correct him and he says “right, its done” and hangs up without even saying bye! I am going to keep annoying them and try get a referral from my midwife to a obstetrician. I have been like this since 2018 so i dont think even having my baby will help 😭

What is your financial situation? Would it be worth a one off private consultation with a gynae specialist or something? That's a long long time to be living with thrush.

Have you been checked for T2 Diabetes? That can cause reccuremt thrush.

Jenny124501 · 30/10/2025 00:22

It will be a NHS obstetrician (i can’t afford private). I have been checked for type 2 diabetes and everything was normal.
I wont lie it has been torture and having doctors mention anxiety when it definitely isn’t anxiety giving me thrush. I have done so much research, have you heard of lichen sclerosis? It is at the top of my list.
