Would Mirena be right for me?

I was on the pill for a number of years. Stopped about 13 years ago.

Have since had 2 DC. Not using any contraception and lucky that we haven’t had an oops baby. I‘ve realised that I absolutely don’t want another child anymore (was fine with an accident before). I‘m nearly 40.

During ovulation I get awful rage. Then again 2 weeks later during my period. My periods are also quite heavy. I don’t want this any more.

I‘m thinking about getting Mirena. Obviously I‘ll talk with my doctor, but am interested in hearing real life experiences.

I don't have periods at all with mirena. Its been great for me!

Yes, they are amazing

Mine caused me quite severe anxiety and tearfulness, which is very unlike me normally. I had it removed promptly and was back to my normal self within a week. Some women love them , but it definitely doesn't suit everyone. Also please research the risks, such as the risk of uterine perforation, migration or lost strings beforehand as doctors don't tend to warn of these like they ought to.

Love mine. It’s great. I’ve had it 6 years. My previous one was in 5 years. No periods at all (occasionally minor spotting) and mine were painfully heavy. Also great for menopause too apparently (I’m not there yet)

I got one age 45 for HRT purposes. I couldn't tolerate the pill or progesterone generally, but the mirena is fantastic.

I do still have periods and PMT and cramps, but nothing like before I had it fitted. No more clots or war like periods.

Go for it. My GP promised to remove it immediately if I started feeling suicidal again like on the progesterone.

After a painful insertion and a couple of months of discomfort it's been brilliant! No PMT or heavy periods, a true wonder. Xxx

Chinsupmeloves · 28/10/2025 21:02

You can easily have it taken oit so give it a chance. Xxx

Thanks all. Sounds promising! I really hope it helps my mood and doesn’t make it worse

For insertion make sure you get paracetamol and ibuprofen 1h before, and maybe if your GP will prescribe with your anxiety, diazepam as well.

Then ask them to inject licodaine into the cervix (it's quite quick so don't panic but will help a lot with potential pain), and also numbing gel as well. I'd ask them to make sure they do it when you see your GP to talk with them and then also make a note, so that it's all prepared when you have the insertion appointment.

The mirena can work really well for ovulation pain, pain in general as it thins your uterus lining, and also with mood issues. HRT can also be a good option so I'd also discuss that v mirena with your GP as well.
