Period clots

MrsCookieCat · 26/10/2025 22:10

Maybe perimenopause but recently my period seems to be all clots and very little actual ‘flow’.

Some clots are massive and pretty painful to pass. Don’t want to bother GP if it’s likely just age but something feels a bit off.

anyone else experienced this please?

Yes I have and it’s very recent, my periods are painful, they never used to be.

The second day of my period is heavy, day 1 and 3 there’s hardly anything there.

I suspect perimenopause too and am due to see the doctor next week

RegentStreetHotel · 26/10/2025 22:17

I had this due to a massive fibroid. It became for a while quite limiting. Please go to your gp.

RetiredAt54 · 26/10/2025 22:19

Yes most likely fibroids, I would pass huge clots, was anaemic because of it. Went to my GP and referred to a gynaecologist and had the fibroids surgically removed.

ForAzureSeal · 26/10/2025 22:22

Please bother your GP! There are many things that are common but not normal that we tolerate for years/decades. And anything that is different should be looked in to.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 26/10/2025 22:22

Another with clots, turned out to be a grapefruit sized fibroid! Push to be checked.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 27/10/2025 09:23

Please "bother" the GP. Any such changes to your 'normal' should be checked out medically. You need a diagnosis first and foremost.

Definitely go to your GP and get them to order a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound, then see what the scan says. It is likely something like fibroids.

Go to your GP and ask them to prescribe tranexamic acid (at a higher dose). Make sure you take it consistently 2 every 12 hours normally, for days as it takes a few days to work. If that doesn't work after a while, try northisterone as that can also work.

Also, ask the GP for mefenamic acid and/or naproxen for any pain, or another NSAID (NSAIDs, which help a lot as they are anti-inflammatories and give pain relief).

Try using a pad and period pants, you can get some from M&S, Tesco I think etc. Also incontinence pads are often thicker in my experience so use those. Take pictures of the clots as well when you can to show to your GP?

Thanks all, I think you’ve just confirmed I do need to speak to GP.

Im hesitant because a had some gynae investigations 2?years ago for pain and mid cycle bleeding. Nothing was found and so the consultant (male) told me it was likely nothing and just to put up with it

Hopefully you will see someone different this time around. They’re not all dismissive like that person was. It sounds like you were not investigated enough two years ago.

Have those symptoms gone? What was the investigation for? If its been a while it is likely unrelated, but defintely still see them, it may have been idiopathic last time or ignored but don't let that influence what you do now.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 27/10/2025 21:42

And no to putting up with it either!. Periods should not ever be painful or heavy that they impact on day to day life.

any tests etc done over six months ago should be discounted as you need up to date results.

Fibroids and or endometriosis to name but two can cause both heavy bleeding and pain to arise.
