Is this normal after stopping the pill

Hi all, fed up today and wondering if anyone has experienced the same after stopping the pill (I was on Yasmin). I stopped a couple of months ago. I had been on it for 6 years post DC2. Had a withdrawal bleed straight away and 28 days later a period which started 9th October.

Lower abdomen been pretty tender on/off but the last couple of days have been pretty bad. It’s very tender to the touch particularly, bilaterally but more so on the right hand side. My child accidentally knee’d me (slightly) during a cuddle and it was very tender and sore..

I have back issues at the moment and the physio suspects L1/L2 joint involvement… have had back pain and SI/hip pain. I started amytriptaline which has worked really well.

also, I was on a flight 4 days ago and it was extremely uncomfortable and I had to sit awkwardly with both DC resting heads on my lap (night time and they were shattered). My back hasn’t been great since so I am wondering it the abdo pain could be muscle/nerve related … or possibly ovulation related. I just don’t remember having this level of pain, at this point in cycle, before starting the pill.

I am 40 and have also had a c-section. No other health problems currently.

if not better in a few days I’ll go to the GP (almost impossible to get an appt but I will try). Just wondered if anyone else had issues with very low abdo / pelvic pain (not immediately before menstruation) after ceasing the pill.

thank you in advance

I didn't have this, but I suppose it could be hormone levels fluctuating and causing cramps. Probably worth speaking to GP if it doesn't sort itself out, like you say. Hope you feel better soon!

It seems to be more related to your back and nerve issues than the pill or ovulation. There might be some mild-medium ovulation pelvic pain, but likely not causing all the nerve symptoms you are having.

I'd go to the GP though, as it is likely the pill was helping a lot with symptoms, pain etc. But I'd also bring uo the back issues as you might need some scans or more medical intervention for it, alongside the physio as it seems severe.

Thank you both. So the pain in my right lower abdomen became worse especially on palpation. Bladder also feels quite painful
when i wee and I feel a bit nauseous and shakey so have come to out of hours.

Hopefully it's useful. Have they seen you yet?

Thanks for asking @TheLivelyViper

I went to out of hours, who sent me to A&E. I waited in A&E for six hours. Initially they thought it was my appendix but all of my bloods came back completely normal so they sent me away with some dihydrocodeine and said I need to go to my GP! I’m doing that this week. The abdo pain has become a little bit more diffuse now… It’s like the pattern of appendicitis pain in reverse.

I also have ongoing back problems as mentioned and I’m having an emergency physio appointment this afternoon. So the abdominal pain may be related, unrelated or partially related. I’m going to push for an MRI.

Definitely push for a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound first when you see your GP, physio is also a good option but it is long-term and involves consistent work over time. So also looking into further medical help is key. The meds should help for now as well.

Did you have any scans at A&E or just bloods? I would also ask about getting something like mefenamic acid or naproxen (NSIADs which help with pain and inflammation).

Do you have heavy bleeding? For the back an MRI/CT may be better but for any potential gyne issue a transvaginal ultrasound is likely needed first before deciding the process. Do you have irregular periods? Excessive hair growth or hair thinning? Acne? Pain during sex or vaginal cramps etc?

I hope the meds they gave you are helping though and you feel better.

Hi @TheLivelyViper thanks again for your help. I saw the Physio today and he mentioned inguinal hernia as a possibility, stating that these don’t always have a palpable lump. They can be hidden… He said it’s not an emergency though and he wants me to try and do two weeks of Pilates from NHS YouTube first! I did manage to confirm with health centre reception that the GP is making my ultrasound referral.

They did not do any scans at A&E … it was a possibility but then bloods came back clear so
they thought the risk of appendicitis was low and wanted rid of me.

I believe I have had one proper period since coming off the pill… I don’t have any bleeding in between and I don’t have any excessive hair growth, vagina cramps or hair thinning.

im thinking i will do my 2 weeks of Pilates, keep up the stronger meds, get my ultrasound done.. then if no improvement go back and demand something … an MRI? Seems the best way of checking for various hypotheses.

Am in absolute agony right now in hip, front of hip/groin and SI joint

I really do think that the lower right abdo pain is coming from my groin hip, like a hip flexor muscle. Physio mentioned that my iliacus felt swollen… (am very slim so everything can be easily felt). If anyone has any ideas I’d love to hear them! Thank you!

I'd wait for the transvaginal ultrasound results first, as they will likely be resistant to do an MRI without 1. Having the ultrasound resulte and 2. Trying some other meds/treatment first. You might want to ask the GP whether through an online form etc as to whether they can add a transabdominal ultrasound scan as they can do them at the same time. I'd add in the words/suspicions of the physio around the hernia.

The exercises will likely help but if it's the actual bone then you will probably need further medical treatments and investigations. I would make sure to not undermine the hip and bone pain and then also the abdominal pain as well.
