Heavy bleeding after period just finished

I’ve never experienced anything like this in 23 years of having periods.

They are usually roughly every month, regular. Heavy bleeding lasts 2 days then it calms down. I came on last Tuesday, heavy bleeding for a couple of days as normal. However it’s usually all finished by now completely. But the last few days I’ve been having a prolonged amount of brown blood, which I assumed was just the period taking ages to finish.
I've just been woken up by the toddler only to stand up & feel that awful ‘gushing’ sensation & there’s bright red blood everywhere, as if my period has just started from the beginning. The only thing I can think of is I have increased my anxiety medication 2 weeks ago. I’ve also started taking Mounjaro again but I’ve been on this twice before with no issues.

Anyone ever had this before?!

Sounds like it could by a fibroid - my mum had this, similar gushing. I would make a GP appointment.

Fibroid seems very likely.
The difficulty is that NHS gynaecology is very lacking and you may have to wait a long time to see anyone.
In this situation I paid for a private ‘well woman’ scan - they couldn’t do anything but at least it told me what was going on.
But do go and see your gp as they will ask the right questions to rule out anything else.

Thanks both. Can they be removed if it is these? Or do they just remain?

They can; whether it is easy or difficult depends on the type.
Getting someone to actually do it is another matter though.
You may have to so some quite strong insisting not to be ignored, though this will be true no matter what the cause of the bleeding is.

So go to your GP and ask for a transvaginal ultrasound. That will check if there is a fibroid or cysts or something else.

Also ask them for tranexamic acid, as that massively helps to reduce heavy bleeding. If it doesn't work then look into northisterone. Also ask for NSAIDs (reduce pain and inflammation) such mefenamic acid and naproxen. That is to help with something like paracetamol, if it is a fibroid sometimes the pain can get worse.

In terms of treatment there's a few options

  1. Progestogens, which help shrink fibroids. So trying something like the mirena coil can be amazing. The mirena will may the uterus lining thinner, less bleeding.

Also, you can try some meds to try and shrink the fibroids. GnRH meds which cause a temporary, medically induced menopause to shrink fibroids. So, for example, linzagolix or injections like goserelin) or nasal sprays. This is normally for smaller fibroids, or a few around smallish or medium. Or before surgery or in the wait for surgery if they are bigger, to make the surgery quicker.

GnRH meds can cause a temporary medical menopause as well. You can however get add-back therapy (so HRT) with low-dose estrogen to help manage side effects and allow you to take the GnRH meds for 6-12 months.

  1. There's also Acessa or Sonata (radiofrequency ablation of fibroids) or fibroid embolization (interventional radiology procedure to block blood flow). This can be used instead of a myomectomy or hysterectomy. Its normay done by an interventional radiologist.
  1. The last options are a myomectomy so removing the fibroids in surgery or a hysterectomy depending on whether that's right for you and if they are quite big. Get the scan first, see what is shows then start with looking at the variety of options if it is fibroids.
