Anyone tried Kijemea to help avoid recurrent cystitis? Or have any tips to help avoid it?

I'm older and experiencing second bout of cystitis 3 months. Rarely experienced it in the past. Had antibiotics last time but realise they wipe out good bacteria and don't help long term.

Trying to avoid getting into a cycle if taking antibiotics and saw Kijemea advertised online - sorry don't know how to link. Claims to work by populating body with helpful bacteria.

Any experience or thoughts?

Hi there,

to Answer you question I have no experience on probiotics for recurrent UTIs. Unlikely to cause any harm but may not actually make any difference either.

Before you start with those I would make sure each time you get symptoms you take a urine sample to be sent to the lab and keep a diary of symptoms - Recurrent proven UTI without an underlying cause in someone over the age of 60 may need referral to urology to assess for bladder cancer. Ideally you should be having a urine sample each time you need antibiotics not just getting the antibiotics as not clear what bug exactly is causing it. I would speak to your GP about this. I don’t mean to scare you and it’s probably not that but important to make sure you exclude the most dangerous and serious things first.

Secondly if you’re post menopausal I would ask GP for some vaginal oestrogen to see if that will helps - people don’t often realise but the drop in hormones causes changes that can lead to recurrent uti. Using some oestrogen daily can help with this as well as vaginal dryness if that’s also a problem.

Hope feeling better soon

I second vaginal oestrogen and also Hiprex, an antiseptic rather than antibiotic.

Another vote for vaginally oestrogen. I also cut down on tea and coffee and stopped using bubble bath. Unscented or olive oil soap only.

....vaginal...

D Mannose is a type of sugar and is a proven way to reduce UTIs - it’s available as a supplement in pharmacies and health food shops.

recommended by a urologist to my dad when aged and continuous UTI

Alllisonty · 16/10/2025 19:58

girlwhowearsglasses Is D Mannose something to be used continually or just when a UTI starts?
