Ablation in clinic?

I’m expecting to be referred back to gynae as I’ve started spotting on the mirena coil again. Last time I was there the consultant said it would be an ablation if I ever went back. Although he also said I’d be past all this when I get to 55, and I’m now 55, so that shows what he knows.
Anyway, I know they suggest it in clinic but I expect it’s painful so I’m just wondering if anyone has actually had it without anaesthetic, and what it’s like?

I did and yes, it was painful but it was worth it. The ablation itself was about a 2 minute process at full power then 30 seconds on low. A nurse held my hand and supported me throughout and I got through it. I don't bleed at all now. It's been an absolute miracle. If you're only spotting though you may feel it's not worth it.

Presumably once you're through the menopause it'll all be done anyway? I know he said 55, but it hopefully he's not far off! I had mine done at 40 so had the benefit for 5 years now. Decent investment for a few mins pain! I might think differently at 55.

I had mine under GA and there was very minor pain afterwards. Like the PP I had mine done at 40 and i’m now 5 years post ablation and can hand on heart say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I still spot every month though so if you’re hoping it will stop bleeding all together you might be disappointed, I still also get period pain. For me though, spotting is a vast improvement on the tidal wave periods I had before, and the raging anemia that came with it!

@ThisCanFuckOffToo the recovery is surprisingly quick isn't it? I probably should have said my surgeon had already done a polyp removal under local on
me and so had tested my pain threshold and knew I'd cope with it under local. I was surprised as I always thought I was a wuss. I'd completely underestimated how much pain I was in every period. He had such a different perspective on what I was going through each month and really wanted to help me be in less pain and stop haemorrhaging blood. I have a mirena as well so I'm not bleeding or in any pain now. Incredible

Oh god yes, you don’t realise how much heavy periods ruin your life until you stop having them! I felt like a new person after my ablation, I don’t think I’d had normal iron or ferritin levels since I’d started having periods! Being a woman can be really shit 🤣

I had a week off work because I could (why wouldn’t you?!) but I probably could have gone back the day after.

Apparently they can wear off and I do bleed more now than I did in the first few years but it’s still very manageable. I might need it doing again in a few years.

I've had this procedure done and there is no way I would have this done without GA. The only soreness I had afterwards was some hip pain. It was done due to uncontrollable perimenopausal bleeding (the cause was constant rises and falls of levels of both estrogen and progesterone hormones). And I have not bled at all since.

Thanks. I’m not sure that it’s enough bleeding for a GA, or for putting up with that much pain in clinic.
