I had the coil placed in Nov 23. This was because my cycle was between 25/35 days and 2 heavy days at the beginning. 5/6 days total period. This causes me anxiety. Was sold the Mirena and the wonder iud.
Since then I have had lighter periods but last for 7 days and then 7/14 days spotting after. Nothing for 2/3 weeks. Just had a scan and sonographer said can’t say much as need to do a report but can’t see a reason why I’m bleeding. No cysts.
No fibroids.
Of course I’m waiting for full results etc but I’m so annoyed and worried and anxious.
Now what?!!!???!!

Im 42. Smear clear. No STI.
Im in complete panic mode.

I first had one fitted in my twenties and everything settled down very quickly, when I had another one fitted in my early fourties especially for heavy bleeding it took nearly a year to settle down. My GP thought this wasn't unusual though. It was very annoying but better than the heavy bleeding.

I would say if the scan didn't find anything there's unlikely to be anything else going on. Did the doctors say they have another plan or what they want to do next? Also you can try and should get on tranexamic acid which helped massively with heavy bleeding and you cam have this the same time as the coil. I'd get that prescribed - make sure you start taking it 3/4 days before your period so it works better and then throughout your period as well.

I asked for ablation and so refered to gyno. Haven’t got appointment yet.
Id honestly opt for hysterectomy at this point.

I'd go for the endometrial ablation first and then hysterectomy (often the ablation is really helpful for people).

When is your appointment with gynaecology?

In the lead-up to that I'd try the tranexamic acid (I have a mirena which took ages to settle, I had a 7 week period after insertion them it added to be existing vaginal spasms and cramps and my heavy bleeding reduced a little but as I was leaking through 7 layers sometimes not that much).

However when I take my tranexamic acid well and properly it truly makes a massive difference to my bleeding. Would you be willing to consider it?

Ask your GP as they can prescribe. Also if you see gynaecology and you haven't tried it - they often make you come back in 3-6 months and make you try it for that time before they put you on the list of the ablation. So I'd try it as soon as you can so when you have the appointment you've been on it for a while and they'll take you more seriously. I am on the waiting list for a uterine ablation.

I will do, thank you.
My period is 7 days and then light spotting for a further 7/14 days.
Im not sexually active, so that’s not why it bothers. Just the unease of feeling ‘something’ isn’t right.

You can use the tranexamic acid for both the spotting and the period - again start it 3/4 days before your period and then continue it throughout your period and the spotting. I have vaginsl cramps without being sexually active they just happen throughout my day and the mirena does make it more frequent for me I think.

When were you referred to gynaecology? Do you have an appointment date that you've been given yet or no?

Are you symptoms just on your period or elsewhere during the month? Do you have any other symptoms you haven't mentioned earlier in general? What symptoms do you have during your period? And if you have symptoms not on your period - what are they? Is the pain worse on or off period?

Also ask your GP for mefenamic acid and/or naproxen (NSAIDs which help a lot) with pain and inflammation and will likely help.

I’ve heard! Still, I don’t know what the crack is, so I’ll leave it till doc or gyno says something productive.

You could look into PMDD as it seeks you may have that - bring it up to your GP and at the gynaecology appointment. I've put some links below on what it is and the treatment and symptoms.

If you're having hair loss, get your GP to do blood tests and especially for iron (you likely need high iron supplements and an iron infusion). This will be due to heavy and persistent bleeding so definitely ask for an iron infusion as you seem to need one urgently if you have hair loss.

So I'd make an appointment as soon as you can with your GP, ask to get tranexamic acid, do a full blood test panel including iron, get an iron infusion and high dose iron tablets. Also bring up PMMD to them and starting antidepressants perhaps for it and a referral to the women's mental health team for therapy if you want, I would recommend this - ask for DBT (as that'd very helpful for PMDD).

That's what I would cover in the appointment, you may want to book a double appointment (if possible) to have time to discuss it all and also not feel rushed. Or if you have an online form say this all beforehand so the GP is up tor speed and you have more time to talk about options not just explaining what's happening.

No worries. When is your appointment/scan date? What scan are you getting - is it a transvaginal ultrasound and a pelvic ultrasound.

Lucymcr82 · 21/08/2025 22:13

Had the scan today. Ultrasound and transvaginal.

A pelvic ultrasound as well? That's great, when do you get the results?

Lucymcr82 · 21/08/2025 22:32

Soon I hope!!
Sonographer said she didn’t see cysts or fibroids and couldn’t see a reason I’d be bleeding…but full results with come through the doc
