Sebaceous vaginal cyst

I saw my GP back in Jan for a small pea sized lump at the opening of my vagina. My GP diagnosed a sebaceous cyst as it is white in colour. Harmless and not causing me pain. Has anybody else experienced one of these? It’s been 8 months and it’s still there - has anybody had one removed? Thanks in advance 😊

I haven’t had one removed but I think I have one and I’ve been putting off the GP’s appointment for weeks.

What did your GP say? Will it ever go away on its own? Can they drain it in the surgery or do you have to go to hospital as an outpatient?

@UserisanonymousIt was the nurse practitioner I saw. She was confident it was a sebaceous cyst because of the colour and it being movable. She told me to leave it alone but to go back if it changes or ulcers. It’s done neither of those things - I periodically check it but would rather it wasn’t there! She didn’t say whether draining was an option or if they could do this at the surgery or not. I initially thought it was a batholian cyst! But she said it’s not. If you get the answers to the questions above I’d love to know. It doesn’t cause me any bother apart from psychologically there’s a lump and we’re always told to get lumps checked out!

Could be worth a revisit? The trouble is that these days, anything not dangerous tends not to be done. worth checking though

I had one. It wasn't near the vagina, it was on the outer lip. They just injected anaesthetic and made a tiny slit and squeezed it out. She showed it to me and it was a small hard white ball, exactly like what comes out of a spot. She put a stitch in that dissolved/came out by itself. The injection hurt most.

@LizzyEmthanks very much. This sounds exactly like what I have. Did you have the above done at the GPs surgery?

At a gynecology clinic. It wasn't at hospital.

user64291 · 15/08/2025 12:54

@LizzyEmthanks. Was this done through a GP referral?

I don't live in the UK so the system is different. I have to pay for health insurance but I just booked an appointment for a smear with the gynecologist but the office is in a general practice. They do GP services and mammograms and ultrasound there. Anyway, I told her I wanted it removed and she booked me another appointment to come back and she took it out. I book my appointments with them myself because my GP is not based there, I go to a different one. The GP can refer for things or I can go direct. But I have to get authorisation from the insurance company for certain things.

@LizzyEmThanks so much. Quite a different system here but I will investigate. Thank you for your help 😊

Has it changed sex life, wearing certain underwear etc? GP would definitely do something if its affecting your day to day life.

Sometimes you may get a kind GP that will refer you otherwise it's put up with it unless you go private. Annoying I know!

You're welcome, definitely try and get it removed, I know it's not easy in the UK, especially for something they'll deem unnecessary. I'm glad I did even though 'it was harmless'. It affected my confidence a bit when being intimate. As a pp said, tell them it's rubbing or something.
