Has anyone had one of these, did you do it under a general or with the paracetamol and gas and air option?

Im nervous.

I have a retroverted uterus. I had a cervical polyp removal, hysteroscopy, uterine lining biopsy and a Mirena coil put in. I took two paracetamol beforehand and found the procedure to be a slightly odd feeling but not at all painful. My gynaecologist thought I'd be fine as I'd had three natural births, otherwise he'd have offered a GA. I decided to go with his recommendation and I was indeed fine.

As you can see from this thread, different women have very different reactions to this procedure. For some it's no worse than a smear, but for others it's excruciatingly painful. Unfortunately you just don't know how you'll react until it's happening. I have a high pain threshold, but in retrospect knowing what I do now about the procedure, I was probably a bit naive in simply trusting my gynaecologist's opinion. I suppose I was lucky that I genuinely didn't find it painful.

I had exactly this last Thursday, they gave me penthrox and a 2 ampules of local in my cervix. Didn’t feel a thing.

I had one with local and paracetamol, felt like a smear but I know it's not the same for everyone. Go for a general if you're worried Flowers. I was prepared to tell them to stop if I needed to.

This was my experience too - exactly how you described it. I had to have it done twice and although unpleasant, it was ok. I also understand it’s not the same for everyone.

I had one 3 weeks ago as they wanted to remove what they think was polyps , my womb lining was thick at 17 mm.
I asked for a GA but there were people having them with no pain relief that were saying it's just uncomfortable.

About three years ago, a gynae attempted polyp vaginal polyp removal with me with no pain relief and no warning to take OTC meds beforehand. Do not recommend. He finally said "I can't get the one on the cervix..." and stopped.

I was then referred for a D&C removal of the polyps under GA. That was straightforward.

Last October, a different gynae performed a hysteroscopy and "more extensive biopsy". Was told to take OTC painkillers beforehand and he injected a local anaesthetic beforehand. (I was scheduled to have a polypectomy at the same time if necessary, but it turned out that there was no polyp this time.)

The speculum going in was uncomfortable - it always is with me - but once he was past the cervix, I didn't feel a thing. I was 64 at the time, have never given birth.

Thanks again. Those that had to switch to a general, was it there and then or did you have to come back a different day.

I was asked to come back another day , my new appointment was 5 weeks later.
I asked if I could have gas and air or sedation but they didn't go that.
The choice was injection in cervix or a general.
My friend was offered 2 stress balls as pain relief.
Another friend said she just wanted it done there and then , she had no pain relief and she went out for lunch straight after , she said it was like a smear that took longer.

Hi I have a retroverted, retroflexed uterus and polyps and had my hysteroscopy and removal under GA. They put the coil in at the same time and also did my smear! As a SA survivor, it was the most manageable way of doing things.

I had a polyp removed under a spinal block/ epidural so was conscious and felt a pulling sensation but no pain. Jelly legs afterwards so had to stay in overnight.
