Ovary removal for cysts?

I’m a 52 yr old woman, due to have colorectal abdominal surgery in a few months and during a scan they noticed large 4/5cm cysts on my ovaries, one on each.

My surgeon said she’d get feedback from gynae about removing them when she does the other surgery and sent me for a more detailed scan.

The cysts appear benign and I am not having any symptoms from them.

I have no idea where I am in terms of menopause as my GP doesn’t do blood tests if you’re over 50, they just assume you’re menopausal and give you HRT - which I’m on. Also I have kept my mirena coil in to help with menopause and don’t get periods, so can’t judge by that.

Now I’ve had a letter saying I can have my ovaries removed when I have my other surgery if I want to and I’m not sure what to do.

I like the idea of preventing ovarian cancer but don’t like the idea of other possible increased risks of osteoporosis etc associated with ovary removal. I have had a ruptured ovarian cyst about 12 years ago.

Does anyone know how much a 52yr old is likely to be affected by ovary removal?

I had one removed at 47 at the same time as endometrial ablation. Only had two more periods and it was over. I don’t know if I’d started menopause then.

Had same last year but my cyst was 11cm - I had a total hysterectomy and the cyst was borderline
