I have an ovarian cyst, It's been there since my 20s, I've had around 5 or 6 flare ups over the years that didn't cause much trouble so I never went to the doc about them, I'm 56 now and post menopausal and 10 days ago I had the worst flair up ever. It eased for a couple of days but came back again so I'm having a transvaginal scan tomorrow. I've never had one before and the thoughts of the invasiveness of it is really freaking me out. And that's before I start worrying about what they'll find.

So can anyone please tell me of your experiences of it, what should I expect and how long does it last. When booking I asked the receptionist how long is the actual procedure and she said 30 minutes! I was too shocked to query that. It cant be that long, can it? Surely she meant the whole appointment would be 30 minutes. Also I've to go with a full bladder so I must be having the regular scan first. Also I'm just assuming I'll have the transvaginal one too, I didn't ask, I'm an awful goose when it comes to these things!

I had one for the same reason and a couple for early pregnancy scans. Actual scan only took a few minutes. It’s similar to a smear test in terms of procedure, it’s wasn’t too bad.

Oh thanks so much Womblingmerrily, 2 minutes sounds ok. Although the worst bit for me with smears is the getting undressed and then the going in bit! After that I'm kind of fine with it all. Thanks again

I’ve had a few becuase of pregnancies and a miscarriage etc

no where near as uncomfortable physically as a smear. Does feel a bit weird in your belly if they move it about but no pain, they should give you a towel to cover your modesty, good luck it’ll be fine!

Hi. I had one two weeks ago. I’ve had a couple in my life. I’m 52. It was absolutely fine. There was the consultant doing the scan and a lovely nurse next to me and we were chatting about other things I totally forgot someone was scanning me internally. Turns out I have a small cyst and then had to have an mri to find the other ovary as it was hiding behind my ‘gassy bowel’ 🤣 Honestly it was no problem. That was on a Monday and in the same week on the Friday I had a colonoscopy and that wasn’t too bad either 🤣

Yes I've had that gassy bowel before for a transabdominal scan. High fibre diet! I might leave the muesli until afterwards this morning!

Thanks very much to everyone for the super helpful replies. Just back from the scans and the procedure was fine. It was great to know beforehand what to expect. And nothing wrong with the ovary. .Or the other one. Uterus fine too. So now I'm in a worse state wondering what it could be, Hey ho!

...and I did think of the penis as it went in! 😅

So glad the procedure itself was ok for you OP

Had this a couple of years ago, I was very nervous about it as I find smears painful. Genuinely surprised that it was so easy, no pain, lovely calm nurses asking if I was ok, lights dimmed down, at one point I almost fell asleep!
