Complex coil removal

Has anyone ever had one and can anyone advise?

I’m so nervous 😖 a previous coil expelled after a routine smear they’re not sure if it caught my coil strings so on my replacement coil they cut the strings short 🙈 well they were short enough that they’ve now completely gone inside my cervix. I’ve had 2 transvaginal ultrasounds that showed mirena still in place, just the threads are coiled round the inside of my cervix. At my last smear, the practice nurse tried to retrieve with a tool she said retrieves threads but no joy. Additionally the service that inserted this coil said because it’s a complex removal they wouldn’t be able to do it and it would be a gynae referral needed and a general anaesthetic.

Roll on to the last few months, my coil is meant to be replaced next year and I’m starting to have ovulation symptoms, random bleeding and in general feel really hormonal so I asked if I could have it replaced early so my gp referred to gynae but the referral has ended up at the service that said previously they wouldn’t be able to do it. They said they’ll have a go at removal which didn’t fill me with much confidence and said they have all the tools there apart from anaesthetic and gas and air. Although I had a local anaesthetic on my last coil insertion so I’m wondering if I’d be reasonable to ask straight up if they can administer the local anaesthetic first before they start rather than me needing it after already experiencing the cervical pain like my last insertion. Just wondered if anyone had any experiences of complex removal out of hospital because I’m anxious thinking of the cervical shock type pain I’ve had previously

My wires are up inside so I’ll be having mine out in clinic via hysteroscopy, no need for GA

Had it inserted under GA.

expected to have it removed under ‘natural’ but it kept ‘drip bleeding’

Very sad less than a year outside an operating theatre, left with a hole in the foot.
that makes you want to throw up.

was wheeled past gynae dept at time of emergency surgery very upsetting.

Everything I’ve read says people have had out under gynae rather than sexual health clinic. Todays the day, my gp has prescribed me diazepam to take before hand 😖

I hope it goes well. Absolutely ask for the local anaesthetic before they try to remove it. It may improve the experience, even just through a psychological effect. Also take paracetamol (if you can with diazepam).

My threads have moved up too. They tried to get it out with some barbaric tool but I couldn't handle the pain. I need a hysteroscopy too so I'm having both done under GA. I'm reluctant to have GA but I just don't think I can handle the pain without. I found the original fitting excruciating too. I know some women say it's a breeze and no worse than a smear. I guess we must have really different pain thresholds or something.
