Hysteroscopy anxiety

HelpWanted1234 · 07/07/2025 23:26

Hi

So after 19 months I am finally getting my hysteroscopy, or at least I believe I am. In that time ive had abnormal bleeding, heavy bleeding and 2 abnormal scans so investigations should have been done much sooner in my opinion, but here I am.

I received confirmation I was on the waiting list for this procedure, then a week later my appointment came through to see the Gynaecologist. Is it likely the procedure will be done at this appointment?

So no, after ready mostly horrific experiences of the procedure, to say I am scared is an understatement.

Advice is greatly appreciated. For context my last smear a year ago was incredibly painful, ive never experienced anything like it before and I remember being convinced something wasn't right as it's never felt like that before. Needless to say I am expecting much worse than that for this procedure, and im not sure I will be able to tolerate it

Thanks

my advice is to ask for a GA, it can be a barbaric procedure otherwise.
Good luck

I don’t know the difference between That or colposcopy. But I had a colposcopy last month and never felt a thing even when they done the biopsy. I was so nervous as all I read I on mn was how painful it was. I know we are all different but I never felt anything apart from the spectrum thing going in

I'm sorry you're going through such anxiety. I'm in a similar situation and in a panic about the procedure and an even bigger panic about what they will find. But we need to remind ourselves that we need to stay calm and collected.

I've read some info online and also watched some NHS videos on YouTube - general anesthetic is an option. Also, doctors will stop if the pain is unbearable.

I'm curious to know (but only if you're ok to share), what abnormalities were found and whether your bleeding has settled a bit at all over the 19 months?

I agree. Please see Campaign against Painful Hysteroscopy on Facebook before you attend any appointment

You have a right to a general anaesthetic. Doctors don’t always stop when it’s too painful and nurses have been known to hold women down. I have had a hysteroscopy without general anaesthetic and I would not repeat the experience.

It’s totally different, a colposcopy doesn’t involve pushing an instrument through the cervix. I would happily have another colposcopy.

Ask for a general anaesthetic, @HelpWanted1234. The procedure won't then be done at your next appointment and you will be assured that you won't feel any pain.

I know two women who had to stop the procedure because it was so painful. And there's a group pushing to supply women with more options for pain relief for hysteroscopies. www.hysteroscopyaction.org.uk/

Painful smears are one reason women ask for GA for hysteroscopy. Remember you don’t have to consent to any medical procedure.

Enough4me · 08/07/2025 00:12

I'd never ever consent to having one done again without GA. I'd given birth twice before having it done and found it excruciating and only stayed still through pure shock. I collapsed afterwards. Had to lie down for 30 minutes to recover and still remember the experience over 10 years later.

Hi. I managed it, just about. Ended up taking ages due to complications. I went grey, I cried, and I feel utterly drained now, but hopefully some answers now when my results return

Well done on getting through it. I found the first two ok but the last one left me nearly passed out and I was glad I had my DH with me then.

You did the right thing in not waiting for a GA though. The waiting list for a GA hysteroscopy was over 6 months in my local hospital and I wasn't willing to wait.

Good luck with your results
