Fed up of thrush

Title says it all. Im sick of getting it. Before having babies I could count on one hand how many times Id had it and post children Im getting it every month. Been to the drs and done a 6 month fluconazole course which hasnt worked. Kept it at bay during treatment but started up again a few months later. Drs have since said it ‘sounds hormonal’ and to just use a canestan pessary when I get it even if it is every month. This just feels excessive, a waste of my money and an inadequate solution. I feel fobbed off and its affecting my mental health now as its so annoying.

Does anyone have any solutions/similar experiences/any ideas on how to help me 😩

GUM clinic helped with mine, they swabbed and it was a different type

Snowbear96 · 04/07/2025 12:01

Didnt even think of going to a sexual health clinic!! @fireplaceembers

Have they done bloods for diabetes?

Snowbear96 · 04/07/2025 12:02

@Overtheatlanticyes have had it multiple times over the past few years

I’ve just finished my 6 month course… really hoping it doesn’t come back!

I would definitely try the sexual health clinic. All the best getting it sorted.

Lollyl88 · 04/07/2025 21:03

@Snowbear96How old are you? I only ask as I have had similar. I had terrible itching but no discharge which I thought was thrush. Turns out perimenopause. I’ve got HRT and not had it since! So GP might be right re. Hormone related

gamerchick · 04/07/2025 21:17

Try the GUM clinic first. They're excellent at their jobs.

LikeABat · 04/07/2025 21:21

Try soaking all underwear, pyjamas etc in Milton.

Snowbear96 · 05/07/2025 06:42

@Lollyl88I’m 28 so would be shocked if it was that! I know they may be right BUT Ive only ever had the self swabs. No examinations or anything to check me over

What exactly have they tested for?

in my case it was diabetes causing the regular outbreaks, excess sugar can be a cause of thrush, particularly linked to hormone cycle. Since getting my sugars under control I have not had thrush once.

LuckysDadsHat · 05/07/2025 07:12

this will sound weird but it could be the toilet roll you are using. I have found that Tesco rolls cause me to get thrush every single time. Took me a while to work ot out though.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 05/07/2025 07:31

I also recommend the GUM clinic. In the meantime, use an athlete's foot treatment (on your feet) at the same time as you use the next thrush treatment. The GUM clinic suggested this as they said that it's harder to get rid of a fungus in one place if you have another one elsewhere. It put an end to years of recurring episodes for me.

Move22 · 05/07/2025 07:35

Partner should take flucanazole as well.

nhsmanagersanonymous · 05/07/2025 07:37

My mum had this at a similar age. In the end the GP suggested the pill as he’d seen that seemingly cause thrush in other women and he said my mum was born awkward and was the other way round for everything! (Typical 70s sensitive doctor). So she started the pill and never had a problem again.
certainly could be worth changing your contraception

NotARealWookiie · 05/07/2025 07:40

This happened to me and it was triggered by toilet roll!!!

specifically the cheapest tesco one

i had thrush for about 3 -4 years and so many courses of flucozanole. Change of loo roll and we are all good now!

Blarn · 05/07/2025 07:45

Has your partner taken the medicine too? Men cancarry it with no symptoms so you get treated, feel better, have sex and it's back.

I hadnit badly after both dc and read that low oestrogen from the birth and breastfeeding can cause dryness in the vagina which can make it very itchy and more prone to thrush. I was going to try an oestrogen gel but luckily a longer course of flucozanole sorted it before I needed to try it.

Snowbear96 · 05/07/2025 09:18

@InfoSecInTheCityJust sent a swab off to the lab! Had had blood tests for diabetes in the past 2 yrs so he was adamant it wasnt that

@LuckysDadsHatinteresting!! Never thought it could be something like that

@MontyDonsBlueScarfthat is also interesting but makes total sense

@Move22but he has never had any symptoms? Is this a thing for both to be treated?

@nhsmanagersanonymousIm not on any contraceptives atm and havent been for years before gettinf pregnant. Also cant have the combined pill. Mini pills fill me with dread!

@Blarnno he hasnt I wasnt aware he needed too as no symptoms! I thought it could be from BF but I stopped about 14/15 months ago. I have a rectocele so wondering if that might not be helping. Glad you got it sorted

Could your partner have thrush or diabetes? It's not contagious as such but can cause problems with a partner.

That's the one with me! It was the Tesco soft toilet roll. Not the basics one, just their regular one with the extra king rolls. It took me months of agony to work that out!

Bluebiscuits · 05/07/2025 18:25

Mine was also triggered by toilet roll! I was buying a brand that used recycled paper, I think it had a high bleach content.
