Surgical removal of coil

Has anyone had a coil surgically removed? GP tried to remove it but couldn't find the threads so said it'll need to be removed surgically.

Just wondering how painful it may be?

I had a hysteroscopy to have mine removed.

You can have it under GA but I was encouraged to have local as I coped ok when various HCPs tried to find it and remove it.

I was not told that the local only numbs your cervix not your womb so I did not take any painkillers before hand so felt everything that was going on. It was very uncomfortable and to be honest just horrible being exposed legs akimbo with loads of people busying around and putting cameras and stuff inside you and pumping water in. In hindsight I would have preferred to be asleep so I did not know what was going on.

It wasn't agony though so just depends on how comfortable you are with things like this.

Oh yikes that sounds awful. I definitely don't want a GA but the thought of having an injection down there and feeling everything...

Can I ask why you had yours removed? Mine is still in date but I'm having some symptoms which they've said might ease if I have the coil removed.

I’ve had a coil put in by ga (under hysteroscopy) you just wake up with period type cramps and apparently insertion is worse then removal.

4 months later had it removed without the same method having to go near theatre, felt nothing but relief and I’m sure the happiness alone that day carried me home. 15 minutes was all it took and I felt like skipping out of the place I was so happy. They did do something down below twice but it didn’t hurt I want to say it some sort of numbing injection.

I did have it removed at a hospital (one that carried out hysteroscopys) clinic though after trying a sexual health clinic who had fears at the time a removal could hurt due to vaginal atrophy and before that emergency gynae unit who tried saying they didn’t see strings at first (but a private scan a month later said coil perfectly positioned) so I was skeptic at that third removal attempt but I had it out and made it home using public transport before the very common heavy bleed.
