Pelvic exam and period

I know I’m a bit late in the day to be asking this btw.
i have a pelvic exam tonight, I presumed an external scan due to them asking me to have a full bladder. It’s dawned on me that they might need to do an internal scan also and my period started yesterday.

i’m in a weird cycle of 1-2 day periods at the moment and its fairly light but do I cancel?

the reason I’m having it in the first place is pain and haywire periods -presumably peri - but the GP wanted to rule any other issues out.

thanks

No do not cancel. They can still do the internal scan but if endometriosis is present (a common cause of ongoing painful periods) the scan will not detect it.

How old are you?. Do not just assume peri. A condition called polycystic ovaries can also be a cause of irregular periods. They should scan your ovaries to see if they are polycystic or not.

I’m 45 so I’m the prime age.

The dr did say that if it is endo it won’t be picked up, I’ve wondered for a while if I have it though. My periods have only been irregular for the last few years, pre kids I was bang on 28 days, then I was either late or early and the pain is similar to contractions both before and during the actual period.
The pain is in my legs and back and I’ve had the javelin arse for as long as I can remember. Plus I still have round ligament pain when coughing or sneezing. Now I’m only on for 2 days but feel ‘incomplete’ when they end.

I know they’ll say nothing has been picked up but at least then I can explore HRT and the Mirena to hopefully get myself de-bloated and de-pained 🤞

Your symptoms re pain and javelin arse could well be related to endometriosis. It cannot be ruled out here. A laparoscopy keyhole surgery o p is the usual way it is diagnosed.

I would have a conversation with a gynae before having a mirena inserted. The cause needs to be determined as well as treating the symptoms.

It’s all done and it HURT!! I haven’t missed dildo cam. She said she had some good pictures to send but I have no idea whether to read that as a good or bad thing, hopefully I’ll hear within the week.

my GP is all for the Mirena, I’ve heard both good and bad things about it so am quite on the fence at the moment. I’ve started a cocktail of supplements this week so I’ll see if they start to have any impact on the peri symptoms

I would still want to speak to a gynae before having a mirena fitted. For some women with endometriosis that has caused them more problems. Also mirena is cheap and costs far less than a laparoscopy.

See a gynaecologist first and push for a diagnostic laparoscopy. The only way to truly rule out endometriosis.

I had it done and my pain drastically decreased as they removed what they could.

My pain was different, I had ovulation pain and couldn’t have sex for about a year because the pain was too excruciating. My periods were always light but irregular.

The results came back as adenomyosis, I had a follow up call with the GP who said that as I’ve had kids they wouldn’t refer me for further investigation, apparently that’s only for women who still want to have kids. Plus as I’ll be through menopause soon (I won’t) Mirena is the best option.
I asked if the Mirena would help with the bloating and she said possibly but as I’ve been constipated for a really long time I’d need to clean myself out and prescribed laxatives. I feel vain moaning about my stomach but nothing fits! If I wear anything slightly restrictive around my middle I end up huge and really sore. That’s not a new thing but it’s getting a lot worse.
In a way I’m glad because I know why I’m in pain and anaemic etc but not glad as I really didn’t want to have hormonal contraception again.
I’ll do what’s advised and see how it goes but considering I’m less than a week past my last period and don’t have relief from the pain I’m not convinced yet.

OP I’d be bothered about the bloating and back pain. I don’t think that’s right.
