Crusty Rice Crispy on my leg - do I need to be checked? (Crusty Image Warning)

Firstly, I HAVE logged a request to have a GP appointment, but I think that I need to prove my leg has completely dropped off first, and I am concerned about being a time-waster - honestly, I love the NHS, but the triage system at GP surgeries seems designed to prevent securing an appointment. But maybe that's for the best with worriers like me around.

This is not the issue, though; it is whether I do need to advocate for myself or just let it lie and not be a burden. I am older, (50's) so maybe these lumps and bumps are just part of ageing.

Basically, I have had something that looks like a rice crispy on the side of my calf for a couple of years now. It is small and has not really grown much over time. But what it does do is crust over, and then bleed.

My melodramatic worry is skin cancer - we have lots in our family - pale Irish skin and all of us encouraged to try and get some colour in our youth..... So, while I wait for a response from the docs, and wonder whether I should push to be seen... I wondered whether other people think this looks concerning - should I be pushy or should I leave it?

Get it checked but sounds like seborrheic keratosis - look it up and see how it compares. Ive had one removed from my face as they dont look very nice when they get ‘crusty’.

Sorry just seen your photo - that doesnt look like mine. Get it checked out.

Thanks for the response, Bilbodog. Yes, I'm hoping they'll see me. I have tended to ignore it, but today the crust knocked off and it's bleeding down my leg, and I thought Ugh... maybe it really needs checking out.

Ummm yeah…. I’d definitely be pushing to get that checked asap.

I had a dodgy looking mole recently, GP sent me on 2ww and was removed for biopsy (was fine). It was all v simple and quick, so for your own peace of mind, if nothing else, I’d definitely contact the GP about that. It looks really sore.

Can't believe it is only 5 weeks since I posted this, but update - not warty old age, but skin cancer, and subsequently, a few friends found on other warty parts of my body that had been mistaken for old age. Massive thanks to those who encouraged me to get it checked, and a wave to anyone else with weird sores - just get 'em checked. (Also, go to the GP/dermatologist to have it appraised. I went to a pharmacist first, and he told me to just stop picking it and it would heal on its own. I was not picking it, and had I listened to him, it would still be festering there).

Sorry to hear this! Do you have a plan for treatment?

RUuui · 22/07/2025 10:06

Getting a second opinion is so important, had a similar situation to you but it was the gp that dismissed it. Went through skin cancer last year, wish you all the best and hope you have a nice quick treatment plan and recovery ❤️
