Hi All, I was wondering when you were all invited for your first Mammogram screening? I'm 52, will be 53 in 5 Months and I've still not had my first screening appointment..is this normal or should I chase it up? Thanks.

I seem to recall the invites are sent in areas, so eligible women in AB1 will get an invite, then AB2 etc, and it’s a three year rotation.

However, no harm in contacting your breast screening unit, but if you have any concerns regarding your breasts, go to your gp before your invite. Don’t wait.

Okay Thank you

I had mine at 51 but like previous poster, it’s every three years through NHS. I’d deffo chase it up if I were you.

Funnyduck60 · 04/06/2025 18:56

4 months after my 50th. Covid delayed my second but only by 3 months. I'd chase it up.

I had my first one the other week, 5 months before I’m 53. They do the screening by GP practice, coming round to each one every 3 years, so some women will be invited as soon as they are 50, some not until the week they are 53

Sunriseoverthemeadow · 05/06/2025 10:31

Okay thank you everyone, will perhaps chase it up

I was 48, they do them slightly earlier in this area.

I was invited at 52 and 1 month old. Too late for me as just finished my chemo. If I had my time again I’d book a private test late 40’s and pay the c. £300 rather than wait for the NHS screening which can be up to 53 years old.

Same happened to me. I was called 6 months after my 51st birthday for my first NHS mammogram. I was going through chemo at that point. I vividly remember the Dr in the breast clinic asking me when my last mammogram was! I remember saying I haven’t had one yet….

Unfortunately, can’t go back in time as I would definitely have had one earlier even if it meant going private as you say.

Just had first one, invited 9 months after my 50th birthday

I think there’s a scheme in some areas. Might depend on your GP Practice. My sister and I live in the same town but different Gp. She only told me after my diagnosis that she’d been having mammograms since 48.

EBearhug · 05/06/2025 19:05

My first was soon after my 50th. I've just had my second, about a month after my 53rd birthday. I suspect it varies by health area.

roses2 · 05/06/2025 19:17

Check on your local hospital website - mine offers self referral and you can book an appointment online yourself.

Eze · 05/06/2025 19:21

Definitely chase it up. I got pulled in for a mammogram almost as a 50th birthday present. My friend realised she hadn’t been called so had to chase and they did find cancer. She’s all treated now, but not worth the risk of waiting.

Dontsayyouloveme · 07/06/2025 11:09

I have bad health anxiety so the two years the NHS don’t scan, I go to a ‘one stop breast clinic’ privately at Spire hospital. It’s £495 and you get scan and results within half an hour. You can get cheaper private appointments when you get the results a few days later but my anxiety is too bad to wait.
