Recovery from Oophorectomy

I am to have a laparoscopic oophorectomy this week. This is because of a large ovarian cyst (nearly 7cm). It doesn’t really cause me symptoms and was an incidental finding on a mri. ThEy have been following it for 6 months and hasn’t changed in size. They may remove my second ovary if they see anything suspicious on it. I am 47. Has anyone had this procedure? How long did it take you to recover. The surgeon said I would be returning to light jogging in a week. In preoperative assessment, they said I would be out of work for 6 weeks. I’m a very reluctant patient

I had a bilateral salpingo oopherectomy (ovaries and tubes), the op took about 30 mins (when I asked the surgeon) and I was able to leave that afternoon. I had to take it really easy for a few days but was able to walk the dog after 4 days….

I had a salpingoopherectomy for a much bigger cyst. I left hospital the same day. Days 3-5 were fairly painful, but after that I was back out for walks and driving and working (not a v physical job) after 2/3 weeks

I had my left ovary and fallopian tube removed as a result of a very large epidermoid cyst. I think I had 3 or 4 weeks off work as mine at the time was physical and involved young children.

I had laparoscopic surgery last summer to remove an ectopic pregnancy, repair some damage to my tube and ovary - my surgeon was a rockstar and managed to save the ovary. I went home the next day.
To be honest, the incisions are so tiny, they weren’t really sore at all.
The thing I found most uncomfortable was all the gas they use to inflate your abdomen leaving my body. Lots of farting, felt like every inch of my body was bloated and every muscle was stretched - almost as if I’d done a really intense full body workout and every single one of my muscles were sore. I could also feel the residual gas moving around if I pressed on my ribs even slightly which I found really bizarre.
Day 1 I wasn’t in any pain at all - I had surgery in the US so I was off my nut on all the bougie drugs the NHS don’t tend to hand out 🫠
Days 2-5 were the worst.
Just take it really easy. Even when you start to feel less sore, it’s so easy to over-do it. My situation is different in that I’d lost a hell of a lot of blood due to the ectopic rupture, but day 5 I felt well enough to try washing my own hair…..DH dashed in to catch me because I fainted 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Good point about the trapped wind, peppermint tea or colpermin capsules will help with that, and buy some massive pants that will cover the wounds to stop clothes rubbing.

Couldn’t work for 5 weeks as had very physical job but took it easy for a few days and was careful lifting things and felt absolutely fine after a week. Zero pain and none of the gas issues I’ve heard of. Had one ovary and both fallopian tubes removed because of cysts. No after affects whatsoever but was already on HRT and have continued with it.

Had abdominal surgery in the 80s to remove tube and ovary due to ectopic pregnancy. Was in hospital a week (they didn’t rush you out in those days). Was back up the pub in two weeks x

That’s a really good point that I forgot to mention.

I was 45 when I had my surgery (ovary and fallopian tube removal). In spite of my consultant saying that it wouldn’t have any effect on my cycles, within 6 months my periods had virtually stopped and I went on HRT within a year.

Yes to feeling super bloated, but nothing too major… for me I had a gentle walk the next day, which pushed it a bit so take it easy but I was back to work in less than a week… was 29 when I had mine.
