UTI - Trimethoprim - how long?

JustAMum31 · 25/05/2025 21:16

Have what I believe to be a UTI. Managed to get a prescription from the pharmacy for Trimethoprim. He said if it doesn’t clear up with that then I need to see the GP.

How long after starting (or finishing) the course would you expect to feel improvement if it was going to work? It was a short 3 day course.

Symptoms:

  • needing the loo constantly!
  • feeling like I wasn’t emptying my bladder completely
  • stinging pain
  • cloudy urine
  • itchy around urethra
No blood, no discharge, no abdominal pain

I generally start to feel an improvement within 24-36 hours. Just make sure you take the doses evenly spaced and don’t forget any of them.

@WolfFoxHare This is what I was concerned about 😔 I’ve just finished the 3 day course and there isn’t as much of a stinging pain but I’m still itchy and having to go to the loo loads 😔
Typical with a holiday weekend and ridiculously busy schedule this week 🫠

You might need nitrofurantoin. I think you might be able to get it from Lloyds pharmacy online, it costs about £25 for the prescription. Otherwise, are you sure it’s a UTI and not something else?

Snippit · 25/05/2025 21:41

I’ve had Trimethoprim recently and it was for a week. I’d previously been prescribed Co-amoxiclav for it, but it didn’t work. I had a holiday that was just over a week away, it was a nightmare and I felt very poorly. I was still taking the Trimethoprim during the holiday, and it took until the end of the course to feel better. UTI’s are horrid and painful, contact your G.P and ask for a longer course, 🤗

@WolfFoxHare Absolutely no idea! I’ve only ever had one and it was when I was in my mid teens (now in 30s!). I’m just guessing that’s what it is based on the symptoms. Pharmacist seemed to agree.
What else could it be?

I’ll have a look at Lloyd’s pharmacy, thanks 😊

I usually get nitrofurantoin from the gp or order it online from boots, I find it works really quick and notice symptoms less after just the first couple of tablets

Hephebe · 25/05/2025 21:44

Nitrofurantoin usually works pretty quickly. I wouldn't hesitate to call the GP and ask for a prescription for that. I've been in Minor Injuries (and in a couple of cases, A&E) before with a UTI, out of hours - it is horrific and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I keep Nitrofurantoin with me at all times now (bought online) just in case.

@Coconutter24 @Hephebe Thank you 😊 My nearest pharmacy that does online prescriptions is closed tomorrow for the holiday typically 🫠
I’ll need to wait and try and get a GP appointment on Tuesday 😬

Hope you get sorted quickly. I’ve started taking dmanose and cranberry supplements daily because I suffer a lot and people recommend them. My last uti I took these every couple hours and it relieved my symptoms

Vinvertebrate · 25/05/2025 22:32

I swear by Trimethoprin, but a 3-day course is not long enough ime. I think 3 is standard now, but I generally request 7 days from the GP.

Hope it clears up soon.

hey!! As a sadly frequent sufferer in my early 20s and occasionally now - call 111 even if late and they’ll send a prescription to your nearest open pharmacy tomorrow. Please don’t wait until Tuesday as can cause kidney infection even if you’re drinking an ocean of water!

explain you’ve had one antibiotic and it hasn’t worked - nitrofurantoin js the more common prescription for it! Don’t pay £25 or wait - both not good as not on GP records.

good luck!

(also potassium citrate is the best non-prescription helper - hard to find but in liquid form I’d keep some in the cupboard! I found some at a pharmacy near to our old house as a young girl working there recommended it and stocked up on 4-5 bottles. (I can get it from drinking certain wines?!!)

brunettenorthern91 · 25/05/2025 22:54

PS this was me on NYD this year which is how i know!

lovemycbf · 25/05/2025 23:00

I’m resistant to Trimethoprim it simply doesn’t work.
I’d say if you’re still feeling it then you need to get a GP appointment
nitrofurotoin sp? Is the only thing that’s works for me for a uti

AnonAnonmystery · 25/05/2025 23:50

I need seven days worth to clear it up, every time.

Peacepleaselouise · 25/05/2025 23:58

Most women will not respond to Trip. It’s next to useless frankly. I’d get nitro from an online dr/pharmacy (Superdrug do it) or if you can be bothered see your GP.

JustAMum31 · 26/05/2025 21:00

Thanks all 👍🏻

Sadly no joy with getting a prescription today unfortunately. It’s a nightmare here on bank holidays with pharmacies etc 😬

Hoping the GP can help in the morning when they’re back open and send a prescription through to the pharmacy 🤞🏼

I saw a urologist 25 years ago and and he told me most women are resistant to Trimethoprim.
