Breast dimple/dent and lumpiness

Mrsworried1 · 23/05/2025 11:29

a few days ago I noticed a little dent on my breast. Went to the GP who examined me and felt the area was dense/lumpy and referred me on the 2ww. I’m so anxious. Im 36 with a young child. Has anyone been through similar?

Yes, although a bit older than you when it happened, I had 10 year old twins and was terrified. Honestly, I think everyone who discovers a breast anomaly and has to wait on the 2WW pathway is scared until they know what they are dealing with. The initial wait is the absolute worst. Once you've got a diagnosis either way, it starts to improve. Nobody wants breast cancer, and nobody relishes their treatment. But it's been incredibly well funded for research and treatment, and the NHS teams are brilliant at supporting emotionally as well as medically.
There's every chance your dent is something else entirely, and if that's the case you have massive relief once it's been checked out. If it is breast cancer they will deal with it.
If you need inspiration from an awesome group of women who have been through this horrible doomy wait for answers, look up the threads Likelybreast cancer after ultrasound 1&2, started last Autumn by the brilliant spartanrunnergirl.
You are absolutely not alone.

Yeah but the dent was on the nipple accompanied by pain. They didn't know what it was but went for 2 scans. Said my ducts were 'prominent' which was what the lumpiness was. Been over a year now and it hasn't changed although pain subsided. Worth getting checked out.

Mrsworried1 · 24/05/2025 18:53

Thanks for your replies @Dwells @PemberleynotWemberley

I’m just really emotionally struggling!
hard to imagine anything other than the worst when I see the dent every time I keep checking I feel sick!

someone I know is going through breast cancer and it was a big shock, shes young like me
and im just terrified.

i think I can feel the lump the doctor found, although that whole boob seems weird and misshapen now x

Yes I'm 36 and I noticed a 'dent' and some skin changes last year, I panicked and went private. ( I have strong family history of BC) They did mammogram and ultrasound and all was fine. The consultant said the dent was likely caused by weight loss and loss of density in the breast due to pregnancy and weight loss.

Mrsworried1 · 26/05/2025 19:32

I’ve gained and lost weight and gained it again over the last year. I can feel a little squishy lump that moves about. Honestly I might go private if it’s ages away for my appointment, but I don’t know if I could afford biopsies! Aparently they are thousands xxx

Once you are in the breast care system the NHS will move heaven and earth for you, and almost always really swiftly. If you have breast cancer you will experience physical, emotional and practical care that is the envy of other patients. You don't need private biopsies. Breast care is well funded and hugely supported by charities also. I understand that you are scared right now but if you place yourself in their hands they will carry you through. The waiting is the hardest part because you don't have any answers so naturally imagine the worst. As soon as there is a diagnosis they will swing into action if you need it.

Your appointment will be within 2 weeks I'm guessing or around about there. Try not to worry most people who attend the breast clinic don't have BC.

Mrsworried1 · 27/05/2025 13:55

Thanks everyone! Thinking the worse as I’m sure everyone does. Wish I knew when my appointment was, it’s my daughter bday next week :( and I’m back to work then too and didn’t want to have to take time off, just adding to the stress.

For all the NHS faults , the 2 week pathway to the breast clinic seems to be working well. My appointment was within the 2 weeks and the appointment was on time too. They were amazing in clinic and I was given the all clear. (Nipple changes and dry skin was my reason to be referred - so I expected the worse) Best of luck OP.

Mrsworried1 · 27/05/2025 14:46

I’ve just called the number on my referral to see if there was an appointment for me and I’ve been told it’s now a 4 week wait due to the demand! Oh god I can’t go on like this for 4 weeks!

Can you afford to go private? I think I got an appointment the next day. Was around £600 for mammogram/ultrasound and consultant fee. Biopsy would be extra, but they can refer you back to NHS to do the biopsy if you can't afford it.

Mrsworried1 · 27/05/2025 16:18

I am going to see when I can get a private appointment definitely. Thank you :)

I managed to speak to the appointment booking people and get an appointment for 9th June. 12 days to go. Don’t know how I’ll keep myself sane. I’ve bruised my boob from all the prodding. It’s not at my usual hospital but happy to travel since the private hospitals are not getting back to me either. X

Not quite the same... but I found a lump between my breast and armpit late last year. Pea sized, movable.

I went to the GP who felt it, and referred me on 2ww. Also highlighting another lump I wasn't aware of.

It was absolutely terrifying. I felt those lumps throughout the day, I convinced myself that my right breast was riddled with tumors.

I had a mammogram (far less painful/uncomfortable than expected), and an ultrasound. All was ok.

When we find things in our breasts, it's naturally terrifying, but more often than not, it's not bad news.

It's impossible not to worry, but do try to balance that worry with the fact that it's more likely to be ok than not, and even if it's not okay, you're on the pathway to treatment. You're doing everything that can or should be done.

Mrsworried1 · 28/05/2025 11:02

It’s the dimple I’m most worried about, never seen anything good about the dimples in breasts xx

lovehearts88 · 28/05/2025 14:23

You'll be okay. Keep busy, and don't google anything. Remember not all causes of dimpling are cancer. It can often be related to benign conditions like fat necrosis or fibrocystic breast changes.

I gave you a list of benign reasons for dimples on one of your other threads, but newspapers aren't going to publish articles about women with harmless dimples because it won't make them money through clicks.

lucya66 · 28/05/2025 21:18

I hope you are ok. My sister got it when she was 29. Hers was a lump, not a dimple. Her care has been great.

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 28/05/2025 21:32

Try not to prod too much as it can eventually irritate any lump- my Breastcare nurse told me this about spotting any suspicious lumps.
I had a recall after mammogram a year ago and had spotted a dent under my boob at the same time. It was caught early and I’m on the other side of treatment now.
Most visits for investigation are not cancer. I hope you can keep busy and have a reassuring appointment.

lovehearts88 · 09/06/2025 17:39

I hope everything went okay today OP

Mrsworried1 · 09/06/2025 19:02

Hi thanks for checking in @lovehearts88 !

I went today, was seen by a breast specialist nurse who had a good feel and also
said the dimple Just looked just like marks really.

she was really reassuring and said she did feel
some sort of lymph node/bump and was going to send me for ultrasound next.

she wrote some notes down and I took them
to the next bit, the person doing the ultrasound was a breast consultant.

she asked to see the dimple, it was quite dark in the room but one light shone down on it and she spotted it.

she asked if I’d had trauma to my breast, I said no?
she said “hmmm”

then scanned same area on the opposite breast and said oh!! It’s the same each side, it’s just breast tissue that’s insert long scientific word I can’t remember and she stopped scanning straight away and said you’re absolutely fine.

i was so reassured and happy, I practically skipped out of there!

but now I’m worried she only scanned a small area near the dimple, and also that she never noticed whatever the node was that the nurse must have felt. Surely she wrote it on the note I took to the consultant?
probably my anxiety making me overthink.

anyway the service was great, super quick, very friendly and caring staff!!!

I think I’m just tired lol xx

That doubts like great news, @Mrsworried1 - you can change your username now! Your experience is a brilliant example of the importance if facing your fears to get them checked out. Congratulations!

lovehearts88 · 10/06/2025 11:30

I'm so glad for you everything went okay. Try not to over think it, you saw a breast consultant and she scanned the area. They know what they are doing. Treat yourself this weekend to celebrate! x

Pearl69 · 10/06/2025 18:21

Great news - after bursting in to tears after being told it’s all ok , I too skipped out of the clinic. I think after worrying about it all for ages it takes a while to process the good news. Onwards and upwards.
