Heavy period nightmare

Brief background: I was on combined pill Marvelon 10 years which I initially went on for awful period pain and it was great for me. This was the low dose oestrogen one
Light withdrawal bleeds etc. could run at least 2 packs together with no breakthrough. fab.

During COVID I decided to take a break and experience my natural cycles etc plus was still considering kids. It did somewhat improve my mood. Periods were a bit of a nightmare and it was a reminder about why I went on it in the first place. Since then my periods became gradually worse and extremely heavy with shorter cycles and unpredictable so planning around it a nightmare.

In December I decided my only option was to go back on the pill. Since then it's been constant breakthrough bleeding which actually became more stressful than trying to manage the heavy days. Spoke to GP and upped it to the higher strength oestrogen combined pill (cimzit when initially it had been gedarel but same active ingredients)

I have persevered. Took the break after 2 packs to have a "proper" bleed (not lighter than a normal period in any way)

This month one pill from the end of FIRST pack I start spotting again so take another break a day early and my period is so heavy it's like a complete murder scene.

I don't even know what I'm asking. Why are my periods not lighter on the pill? Why is it not working when it used to be perfect? Anyone any experience of this? I'm thinking I may as well come off. I'm 37.

I feel for you OP, it’s utterly miserable having flooding periods. Only thing that helped me- and actually stopped my periods- was a mirena.

Both fibroids and endometriosis (this is a common cause of ongoing and or severe period pain) can cause heavy bleeding to arise. You need to find the cause of this as well as treating the symptoms. Your GP should refer you to a gynaecologist as this is well outside a Gps general remit.
