Worried about Ovarian Cancer and feel like GP isn’t taking me seriously

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.
I’ve had a GP appointment this morning, after noticing over the last few weeks a pain in my right side and a sort of pressure as well as feeling like I need to wee constantly- even when I’ve just been.
I’ve also, over the last few days been constipated and when I have managed to go my poo has been black. I’m 38 and my periods have got increasingly heavy and more agonisingly painful as I’ve got older, I’ve also started passing huge clots.
The GP didn’t seem in the slightest bit concerned, I had to be asked to be referred for an ultrasound and it hasn’t been done urgently. She just vaguely mentioned fibroids and said the black poo was likely blood caused by taking paracetamol even though I’ve not taken any for weeks!
I know the poo issue isn’t an indication of ovarian cancer but everything else is and I just feel like I know something isn’t right.
She didn’t feel my stomach or do any sort of examination and I just feel completely fobbed off. I’ve come home and burst into tears. I had a blood test recently as I’m on levothyroxine and that showed my haemoglobin levels were low but my iron levels are within the normal range which is surely also concerning?
Just looking for advice if anyone has been through similar.
Do I push for a second opinion? Another appointment with a different doctor?

Definitely push for a second opinion but for a more open cause for your pains together with the dark stools, which indicate blood somewhere in the system. Just because the pain is where you think your ovaries are, do not rule out a problem with your intestine, bladder or any other internal organ. Good luck.

Hi OP, I agree you should push for a second opinion and push for an urgent ultrasound. Given your age, the likelihood is it isn't anything sinister. But good to go for your piece of mind. Good luck and keep us posted.

Paracetamol does not cause bleeding.

And no physical exam? That GP visit sounds bizarre. Go and see someone else. You should have a qfit test to check for blood in your poo, a ca125 blood test and an ultrasound at the very least. Go private if you have to.

See another doctor (you can request this from the same surgery). If you have black blood in your stools and these symptoms which aren't typical for you they need to investigate what's causing it.

Viviennemary · 07/05/2025 08:31

You should certainly push for another opinion. In all probability you will be fine. It is a relatively rare form of cancer but the symptoms are often missed. Disgrace your doctor has fobbed you off.

Black poo and having low haemoglobin (whilst not indicators for ovarian cancer) needs looking at too!! Ask to see a different doctor. Sorry you’ve been treated like this.

Are you sure it was an actual GP you saw? That sounds awful. Paracetamol doesn't cause GI bleeding - that would be ibuprofen. No examination is very worrying.
Absolute basic care would be an abdominal and pelvic exam in order to put the correct request on the scan form.

The poster upthread was right. You need further investigation but not specifically for ovarian cancer.

The symptoms you mention could be caused by any number of things. The main symptoms for ovarian cancer are unintended weight loss and ascites, as well as some others. Unless you have either of these and ,given your age, the odds of it being ovarian cancer are very low.

But, unless you were taking a LOT of paracetamol over a long period, it is really unlikely to cause a GI bleed. It is given as a long term treatment instead of ibuprofen for that reason.

You could ask for a CA125 blood test, which a GP can offer, which is a marker for ovarian cancer.

Ideally, if you can afford it, go to a private GP, who has more time to examine you thoroughly and refer you for relevant tests.

If that’s not possible, I would request cancer marker tests from the same GP, which would at least put your mind at rest.

Ask for a fit test. It checks for blood in the stool.

Yes definitely ask for a second opinion. Go private if you can
