Does this sound like hypothyroidism?

Hi, 34rs, F, and I have been having these symptoms for a good year now.

-heavy and prolonged periods (at least 2 weeks of some kind of spotting/bleeding)
-weight gain
-feeling cold often
-brain fog and in a freeze state often
-muscle aches even if I haven’t been doing much
-iron deficiency

gp has requested a hormonal blood test to check for peri(which happens young in my
fsmily) and thyroid. I am not sure if it’s a full thyroid function test, but we shall see.

I did use one of those online thyroid tests about 2 years ago which came back normal. Could I have developed hypothyroidism since then?

these symptoms I imagine are also similar to peri menopause and iron deficiency. I have been on iron tablets sincr last summer and I am not feeling any better.

thanks for reading

Could be. Have you noticed anything going on with hair/eyebrows thinning? Or your tongue going scalloped?

What strength iron tablets are you on and what is your routine for taking them? (I.e. what do you eat & drink in the hours around taking them).

Don't let your GP fob you off with "it's normal" when you get your results back. Make them tell you the numbers. There's subclinical hypothyroidism - where your numbers are not quite bad enough for them to start treating you (according to the NHS, which has a very broad reference range in comparison to other countries). According to NICE guidelines, they should still try you on levothyroxine if you're subclinical but having symptoms.

Could be - my DD has it with similar symptoms.

but honestly those symptoms happen with do many possible deficiencies/diseases.

check vit D and B

Earyweary · 16/04/2025 18:22

Thanks both. I had vit d and b12 tested in Jan- they were really good numbers because I have been taking those supplements.

i am on 210g ferrus fumerate every other day which was recommended..
i try and take with orange juice.

my ferritin levels were only 34 in January but apparently it’s normal. Shocking.

i have access to a full breakdown of blood tests on my nhs app thankfully.
my hormonal blood test is next week.

For anyone interested.. my TSH levels came back as 3.8, which is within the ‘normal’ range. Apparently optimal range is 2.0 and under according to many websites. Going to ask gp for a t4blood test.

Would they treat me for having symptoms but ‘normal’ tsh even though it is at the higher end of normal?

No your range is completely normal and they normally don't normally treat until about 5.5 from memory. Optimal range of 2 is for anyone that is over 5.5 and they like to keep levels lower. So again your results are fine. Your level also isn’t at the higher end of normal so not sure where you got this info….also there are a lot of other hypothyroid symptoms you don’t mention which can be worse - dry skin, constipation, weight gain (but eating almost nothing) etc

Doesn’t sound alike thyroid to me (I have hypothyroidism and peri) both from the symptoms and your test results. Possibly peri but you do seem a bit on the young side for that.

Your symptoms sound like they could be a lot of things so some vitamins as others have suggested would be a good start. But you need to speak to your GP - we can’t diagnose you over thr exceptionally limited info you have provided.

Looking at my fbc done in January.. my
b12
was great but folate was just above normal.
my mchc is high aswell(above normal range but this was not flagged up?)

anemia perhaps…
my ferritin levels were actually really good for a change, so I know my tiredness is not from being iron deficient.
