Low carb diet making me feel horrible

I only started on Sunday and today I just feel rubbish, like a really bad hangover. I was wondering if there was a way to do it slowly rather than just cut out nearly all carbs. I can't cope with feeling like this, I don't even have the energy to go for a walk. It's making me wonder if I am doing the right thing. For info I am 61, prediabetic and 5 stone overweight.

Maybe try cutting down slowly first to ease you in.

If you can push through a few more days you should come out the other side, I've also had to dramatically cut carbs due to prediabetes. First few days were rough. Get some low carb sweet treats like Grenade bars or sugar free jelly to hit that sweet tooth.

It doesn't last. If you're pre-diabetic then it's a good way of losing weight - that will be making you feel a bit crap as well. I had a week of feeling rubbish - tired, cold, headache - and then I started feeling really bright on it (and losing weight).

You need to take an electrolyte supplement - something like Zero by High5

In the short term, the critical electrolyte is sodium; cook with it and add it to your food. Have a hot drink made from Oxo or Bovril or Marmite.

It’s only a temporary thing, and you should feel much better in a day or so.

HIGH5 ZERO hydration tablet is a refreshing sugar free electrolyte drink with zero calories that makes it easy to stay hydrated throughout the day. Natural Flavours.

They call it 'carb flu'.

  1. Drink lots of water (or any sugar-free, sweetener-free, dairy-free). However much you're drinking, drink more.
  1. Add salt to your food, because all this water will flush out sodium from your body.
  1. Take a multivitamin and mineral supplement, for the same reason.

It does pass.

Head over to the LCHF (or is it HFLC?) weightloss boards for good advice and experienced support.

It's called keto flu and doesn't last too long

That’s what I’m thinking. I can’t cope with feeling like that, I am a carer for my adult ASD son and self employed.

Thanks but I don’t think I can. I am going to restart but cut down on carbs rather than eliminate them, I can’t cope with feeling like this.

Thank you. I have already eaten some carbs because I simply cannot cope with feeling so crap. To be honest it scared me a bit. How can it be healthy but make you feel ill?

Even one day is too long for me. I’m going to reset and try again with half and half and then reduce gradually.

It’s a good idea op, carbs are there for a reason! I tried to cut carbs a few years ago and after a few days my manager called me in and said everyone was worrying about me and when I told her she said it’s impossible to get through any sort of an active day without any carbs. So cut DOWN on the baddies and go from there (everyone says just cut out bread etc etc but just start halving, drink loads of water, eat protein, fruit, veg, yoghurts and try to ease off eating after a certain time (I went with frozen yoghurts or grapes and new hobbies to keep me going!) best of luck op x

I recently am eating less carbs, but not cut out altogether. If I have carbs on my plate then I eat them after the veg/fibre as it lessens the impact of them (or so I read anyway!) Some meals I have no carbs and others I do but not as much as before so I figured that's some sort of happy medium
