Mini pill to stop prolonged heavy periods?

Hi, I hope somebody can help or offer some advice/information on their own experiences.

I am in perimenopause and am having incredibly long and heavy periods. I have seen an obstetrician and he suggested mirena coil or mini pill. I opted for the mini pill but hellooooo mega long and heavy period with clots. It finally stopped after one month but I'm wondering what will happen next.

Curious to know what people's experiences were when they first started the mini pill.

Thank you.

Gynae insisted I try mini pill for 6 months because I’d already tried Mirena (which was dreadful, non stop spotting or bleeding). I can’t believe I stuck it out for 5 months, the bleeding constant and horrendous. I was so anaemic by the end and could barely stand. I think there was only around 18 days in the whole 5 months I was on it that I wasn’t flooding/bleeding/passing clots. I seriously wondered if I’d actually seen someone qualified because I couldn’t believe they put me on it.

They next suggested ablation and I point blank refused because I know there is a chance it can grow back, and then I’d be in the exact same boat.

It had taken me 5 years under gynae to get to that point. I ended up breaking down and begging for a hysterectomy. Best decision ever, although I do now wish I’d kept my ovaries as I seemed to age overnight. Had no clue that would happen!

I have endometriosis and adenomyosis which come with heavy long periods and have taken the mini pill since my six week check with my youngest who's 10 and haven't bled once in all that time so it must be different for everyone.

Maybe wait until you're due next to see what happens.

I had a mirena ( my second- no issues with first) for this and bled so heavily that it came out after about 3 months. Then went on mini pill and with a couple of unpleasant exceptions have been pretty much period free since then.

This is great to hear and I'm pleased it has worked for you.

So pleased to hear all ok now. But I wonder if you ever got an explanation for why the second mirena didn't work out for you?

I’ve been on minipill for 3 years - had one initial bleed and then nothing. Absolutely life changing.

I'm the same as you premenstrual and was suffering horrible heavy periods. I asked to go on the mini pill, it did take 4 months for it to settle down, but it's been almost 18months and no periods. I had one about 4 months ago but possibly due to an interaction with other medication I was taking.

It's been the best thing for me.

I took it for three years when my periods started going a bit haywire with perimenopause. It was great, after the first few months I barely had a period at all. I had to stop it when I wanted to go on HRT and hit a Mirena coil then. The Mirena (or HRT) made me gain weight but otherwise also trouble free.

I have take mini pill for 6 months now maybe just over and it does get better at around 6 months. I was every 28 days on the combined pill, depo, implant and coil but the mini pill pushed it too 5/6 weeks, still heavy and painful. I think now my bodies getting ready to stop them. I really like the mini pill at 33 it’s the best contraceptive for my body so far xxxx

@Seekinginfoladyno reason, sadly- I even had an ultrasound after it was put in and it was definitely sitting in the right place. They offered to try another one but I couldn’t face it so that’s why I’m on the Jobi pill
