Excruciating periods, what could be causing this?

Hi all,

Looking for some advice please. Growing up as a teenager and even into my early 20’s I always considered my periods ‘normal’. Yes they were painful but they were manageable. The older I get (28 now), the worse they seem to be.

I tend to have painful enough ovulation too, a lot of pelvic pain etc. But my periods are now at the point where they are excruciating. For a whole week before I have on and off strong cramps, and then the first day or two the pain is almost unbearable. I actually had to pull over when driving because the pain was so intense.

I don’t understand why this is happening? I’m wondering if it could be the copper coil I had fitted a number of years ago. Hormonal pills etc aren’t an option for me as they really impacted my mood before in the past. But does anyone have any experience of this please?

I see a lot of stuff these days about endometriosis awareness but I don’t think it’s that as majority of the time I don’t feel pain. It is just during ovulation, the week before my period and then during.

Endometriosis?

I think it could still be - not an expert, and apparently shocking to get a diagnosis.

Hi, I've not experienced pain like that but my advice would be to see a doctor. Something's not right. Good luck.❤️

This exact thing happened to me. I went to the doctor frequently about it and they’d just put me on the pill or shrug their shoulders or once they did a scan of my kidneys in case it was that.

Fast forward to being 37 after three years of ttc with literally not conceiving even once (everyone just told me to relax and it’d happen, including doctors) and it turns out I have endo. This was only discovered during my ivf egg retrieval (because you can only really find it by going inside, not through scans).

If you want children then it would be good to get a diagnosis and treatment. I did have limited success with ivf but I could just as easily have not been this lucky. Of course, you should also get a diagnosis for you first and foremost, not just future children. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Endo or fibroids. Insist on a gyne referral.
